What to ask at pre-IUI appointment?

I’m in the UK and did my fertility test and treatment on the NHS. We didn’t need any drugs like chlomid as I ovulate by myself and so there is no need.

one thing I did learn was that when fertility treatments are paid for by the patient not the state a lot of ‘extras’ are recommended which actually have little or no evidence behind them. Private clinics here have come under fire recently for recommending a whole heap of pointless tests and treatments in order to get £. They prey on people’s desperation.

im assuming the system in Belgium is part government funded like it is here. We got what we needed but nothing extra.

stellate23 :  I think it can take some getting used to. There is likely a government body in Belgium that will have all the evidence on which they base funding decisions that you can access.

The questions I had were:

Should we continue trying the natural way?

How long does Darling Husband need to wait before the IUI from the last time he ejaculated?

If its unmedicated I guess you go in when you get a positive opk? My clinic gave opks out for free and I didnt know this the first round. So I would ask I’d they provide them.

stellate23 :  yes! I wish I had known! I didnt have a trigger shot for my IUIs because I was ovulating regularly so they had me use opks. I had some cheapies but they provided digitals (which are expensive but so nice!) So I wish I’d known from the start!

I did IUI in Canada. All our preliminary testing is covered, but the actual procedure/fertility treatment is not. For me, I was ovulating so they also did an unmedicated cycle, and I got pregnant both times despite low sperm count post-wash (in case that’s promising for you). 20 month old and currently 27 weeks.

Similar to other posters, I would most want to know about the process for you and Husband leading up to the IUI. I just used opks, no ultrasound, but I would have needed to know when to take the opk, and when to get the IUI in coordination with a positive test. Also instructions for your husband would be good. You could ask if they do back to back inseminations (my clinic doesn’t but some will do two, 24 hours apart). Ask about sex before and after the insemination. And you might as well ask about the process after. What blood work, when, follow up tests/ultrasounds, when they release you to normal care. My clinic did progesterone 7dpo to confirm ovulation and then hcg at 14dpo and 16dpo. They did a viability scan around 7.5 weeks and then I was done there.
