Believe it or not diapers.. but that is more of a present for the parents. So books would be great too.. my little girl loves books.

I agree with the PP’s that suggested things like savings bonds, photography gift certificates, and other non-material gifts – all great ideas.  Things that will always get used are good too – diapers, sippy cups, dishes or snack containers for kids, bath toys, and other “everyday” things.  All of these items tend to wear out after continuous use and it’s always nice to replace/replenish the family supplies.

Love the savings bond idea!!! It was great to cash all those in when I graduated college and needed money to tide me over during the big job hunt.

I’m sure parents would like it too!

I think the whole toy/clothes thing is still a good option for a baby even if they have a sibling.  Sometimes its nice to get something new just for them rather than a hand-me-down.

Sometimes for kids you can get like a lifetime fishing/hunting license for really cheap when they are young.  They will appreciate it later.

I like the classes idea. Or the savings bond. Really, 8 mo. olds have no clue what’s going on and would probably like an empty box that he can unwrap and then play with the wrapping paper.

@Mrs. Spring:  This is what we do for my niece too.  We’ve given her swimming lessons, ballet class and now she wants to start spanish classes.  She loves the experiences and really loves showing off what she’s learning to us so we get a kick out of it too…maybe not as easy for an 8 month old, but really great as they grow up!

Also, complete side note, I first read the title of this post as WANT to buy an 8 month old…ha!

I still think toys are nice for kids, but just go for a less conventional route. Bath toys are a good one – fun for kids, a little different so they won’t get the same gift multiple times, and helpful for parents too – bath time can be a struggle without some cool toys! It’s a nice gift idea.
