I don’t know what kind of places are available around you, but could you rent out a room at a club or bar?  You could make it a surprise and have all his best buds there, with a bunch of drinks, and ask someone to bring chips and cards for poker?  You could take him there just you two, then have everyone there to surprise him?

It sounds like he would love something that’s more simple, but also something you put time and thought into doing!  Good luck!!

When my Fiance turned 30 i made a scavenger hunt for him to get his gift. I found clues online that all rhymed and taped them to his favorite candy. He loves anything reeses so i bought all different kind reeses pieces, cups etc and attached the clues that led to his main gift – a watch he had been wanting. He really liked it and after we went to a great steakhouse.

For my FI’s 30th, last year, I made him a scrapbook called “My 30 greatest moments”. I emailed his friends and family and had them send me a write up and a photo of the moment if they had it too. He loved it! Maybe you could present it at the surprise gather or have all in attendance preselect a moment/story and talk about it at the party, sorta like a roast? Just an idea. Way to plan ahead ๐Ÿ™‚

For my SO’s birthday last year we did an all day “Preppy Pub Crawl”.  Everyone had to dress up over the top preppy, (golfers, tennis pros, etc) and we had a whole line up of pubs located in a party beach town in the area.  I also made up bingo cards that had all sort of things that people had to do or see or drink.  First one to get bingo won a prize.  We had an awesome time and it was hilarious seeing every get dressed up, (we are SO not preppy people and thus the fun).

A friend of ours planned a surprise 30th birthday for her husband a couple months ago.  Both their parents, plus a few friends, flew in from out of town, and along with a whole bunch of local friends, we surprised him after he got home from spending the day with his parents.  It was a pretty chill house party, but everyone brought a six pack or two of interesting craft brew, and there was really good catering.

I’m doing something similar but less ambitious for my fiance’s 30th next month – a couple of town friends are making it, but mostly we’re just having everyone over and acting like immature college undergrads instead of overstressed graduate students for a day.

Any sports tickets or bands locally that you could get a VIP pass for him and just invite friends to join?

I didn’t read through the other posts – so sorry if someone already mentioned this – my thought is a Vegas themed party (at someone’s house).  There’s tons of design elements you could do with a Vegas theme (dice, cards, etc.) and then for entertainment set up various table games  (just like a casino floor).  I think everyone would really love something like that and it could be as simple or complex as you want!
