We have a large “living room” in our house that essentially now funtions as a giant entry way. The old homeowners added a new living room, and this is where we watch TV, have a fireplace, etc. So the original living is now useless. Right now there’s a couch on one wall and an entry table across. We have some floating frames and some pictures. It’s really too big to be just a sitting area of conversation, plus since we have another living room it doesn’t need that purpose. It has vaulted ceilings, so it’s easily the biggest room in the house. I have thought about the following
1. Bar area + Smaller sitting area
2. Home office area + Smaller sitting area
Would either of those be reasonable? I am wanting to give part of the space purpose, then keep some sitting. I’ve attached a sketch of the room. There’s no windows or doors. Just open doorways. The left top leads to the kitchen. Forward/top is the newer living room (with TV and Fireplace), and the bottom right leads to a hallway with the bedrooms.

What you do with this space depends entirely on your lifestyle and where you would find the most value with the extra floorspace. If you need a home office, make it an office. It sounds like it would make an amazing dining room if you have a large family or like to entertain. Perhaps a playroom if you have/will have children? My husband would make it a pool table room in 5 seconds.
It could really be anything, just make sure it adds the most value to your life and isn’t just another room to fill with furniture and never use.

Craft room? Reading room? Dining room? Bar/sitting room? Game room? Home office?
So many options depending on what you want to use it for. If it were me I’d probably turn it into an office/craft room with a nice cozy reading nook. But it depends on what you want to do in your home.

Completely agree with PPs that the best use of the space is going to depend entirely on your family and lifestyle. I think both of the options you’ve posed could work well – but which do you think you would get the most use out of?
Personally, a home office with a sitting area/reading nook would be one option I would consider (I’ve always wanted a home library lol). A formal dining and/or sitting room would also work well for my family (providing there isn’t already a nice dining area lol). Hubby would push for the space to be a games room with a bar, which would also be a good fit for us.

This almost sounds/looks like the house I grew up in! We had the exact same thing. We used it as an office/seating area. There was a desk with a computer against one wall, and just a nice bench on the other. In the corner there was comfy chair with a beautiful lamp and was used as a reading area.

I personally would do a playroom if I had that extra space. But if I didn’t have a kid, I would do an office.
I agree with PP thought that honestly we can’t answer it for you, if you’d use a bar more than an office than go with that. If you’d find use with having a seperate office space, I would go with that.
