As with any vendor, you are the customer and should be able to customize exactly what you want for a dj.  There are sooooooo many djs out there, and you just need to find one that is accomodating to your particular needs.

As far as control on the playlist, you should have as much control as you’d like.  Your dj should be able to play song for song what you want or just have a good mix of music that suits your taste.

Questions to ask:

Does the billed time include only play time or is there extra billing for set up/tear down?

What do you wear?

What kind of equipment do you have?

What kind of electrical source will you need?

Do you accept requests?

Can you get ANY song that we want?

Do you have a wireless mic for us to use for toasting?

How much room do you need for your set up?

Are you willing to make announcements such as introducing the bridal party or others?

Can I contact some of your recent references?

How long have you been in the business?

What is your back up plan for equipment failure?

Can you play outdoors?  (if needed)

What kind of lighting system do you provide?

This is just a running list of questions that came to mind, and they are definitely in a random order!  🙂

Thanks for the questions.  Here are some other questions I got from my friend:

What do you play during down time? – my friend interviewed a DJ and he was so nonchalent about it.  The other DJ told her that he tried to play music that would get the guests in the mood for dancing so she went with him.

What style of music do you play?

Top 40, Jazz, etc.  you want to know what type of DJ he is.

How do you get a crowd going?  This was important for my friend, just depends on if you think that is important.

Oh, one other thing my friend told me was to see if he actually liked his job.  One DJ she spoke to didn’t seem to  like doing weddings.  But another was really happy about it.

Good luck!  I’m doing the same thing now.
