so the guy gives the girl a ring… what can we give in return?
I mentioned getting him a ring, but he says if other guys don’t usually wear engagement rings then he doesn’t want one either. I suggested a watch, a necklace–all no go. he doesn’t like wearing accessories. any other ideas for a gift that will last? what did you get your guy, if anything?

My friend just got engaged to a Norwegian and apparently its tradition for the guy to get a ring too.
I’ve been stuck on this too. Necklace is a no go and so is a watch (because he’s super fussy about his watches).
I was thinking about something else… he sold his clarinet a few years back and I thought I could replace it. Other thoughts are crystal whiskey or brandy glasses.
Is there something like that which would suit your FIs personality better?

I gave my now husband great sex and the benefit of my yes. What’s with the need to reciprocate?

I got him a ring because I proposed to him with it. When I later asked if he was OK with it (because some guys can feel strongly about not wearing even they wedding bands, not to mention engagement rings) he said no way – it is only fair if he gets to wear something too (in fact, he was planning on proposing to me too and was planning to buy 2 rings – so he wanted to wear an e-ring from the start and it wasn’t from my head).
I think most girls who do want to return the favor buy watches, but it is true that here in Europe more guys go with engagement rings if they want an engagement jewelery.
If he doesn’t want something he is willing to wear as a constant reminder of your joyous engagement I do not see a point of getting him anything jewelery-related 😉 Either he is proud of being engaged to you and not afraid to show it, and then he should. Or he just wants a gift in return – so buy him anything that will support one of his interest… Or if he doesn’t want a gift at all don’t bother or go with one of his hobbies to make him happy 🙂
If you would like to try some more ideas to ask him I would consider any of these (fancier versions of precious metals/stainless steel with personalized engraving etc.):
- money clip
- dog tags
- hip flask
- pocket knife
- any electronic device (flash drive, camera, iPod, phone, ebook reader…)
- pocket watch
- picture frame with photo of you/you as a couple
