the mother of his child will most likely register.  But if she doesn’t, check out Lucie’s list.  She does a great job of rounding up must-haves. https://www.lucieslist.com/

Gift cards were my hands down favorite. I know it doesn’t feel thoughtful, but they were really the most useful.

Years ago I heard that you can never have enough onsies and washcloths, so I run with that. I typically get new parents a dozen or so onsies sized for 6 months to 9 months,  because everyone else usually gets the 1 – 3 or 3 – 6 month sizes. Washcloths… I buy them whenever I see them at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. It’s nice to have a stash 🙂  So my gifts are ‘boring’, but I have had severel “giftees” call me  many months after the shower thanking me for thinking ahead. ie, the baby grew out of their current stock of onsies “overnight”, and then they realized they had the bigger sizes so didn’t have to run out and buy more.

My go to gift is to buy a small bookshelf and start a tradition of giving them books on special occasions.

Gift cards! We were able to get a lot of supplies for several months just using gift cards we had received. Also, diapers and clothes in larger sizes are always helpful. For the entire first year, I had things packed away and was able to just pull them out as the baby grew.

Something fun that we did was have people decorate onesies in a variety of sizes at the baby shower. We were able to have cute things decorated by friends and family for his entire first year.

I also really like cute diaper bags that can double as a purse so mom can just drop her wallet down in the bag and not be fumbling with a bunch of stuff but that can be a really individual thing.

I’m due in a month – at this point, I just want Target gift cards so I can buy diapers or whatever random stuff I realize I need and don’t have.

Also, in my Facebook group of moms due the same time as me (from Weddingbee) everyone’s biggest pet peeve is receiving an off-registry gift. Like, SUPER inconvenient and annoying.

I tend to get cute clothes in a slightly bigger size 6-9 or 9-12 months, because everyone gets the newborn stuff. I got my sis a great Dr Seuss diaper bag too.

My sister just had her first and is more of a garage sale and bargainer than someone who wants to register for a bunch of expensive stuff. I talked to her and let her know I wanted to get her something more substantial than a few onesies. She told me she’d been having a hard time finding a good deal on a glider, so I kept an eye out for the next few months and arranged for her hubby to pick up a perfect one from Craig’s list for her ( I live out of state) I really am happy I was able to get her something that she uses every day and was exactly what she wanted. I’d say check her registry or ask

My go to is a baby tub (I always buy the one on their registry, unless not registered for one then I just pick one). Then I fill it up! Diapers in various sizes, wipes, baby shampoo, washclothes, toys, diaper cream, a few outfits/onsies, etc Basically all sorts of various items. I try to take my que from the registry and stick with the brands mom has registered for. That way it’s like one giant useful gift basket.

Disclaimer ** That gift is for people I’m super close with, because it gets pretty expensive.

I would buy at least one thing from the registry, and it really depends on what hand-me-downs are available, but if you want add-on items…

Some folks will disagree with me, but now that my baby is older… I really appreciate all the infant toys that I was given (teethers, sensory toys, stuffed animals, etc)- before my baby arrived I thought they were a bit silly and just put them in a bin thinking they might never be played with, but now my baby (5 months old) has played with every single one.  (disclaimer: no hand-me downs)

Other favorite items: exercise ball, boppy pillow, good baby nail clippers, boon lawn bottle drying rack, Fisher Price “frog chair”, spa-day for mom post-partum, hooded towel, baby bath tub

Best gift we were given: dinners for 2 weeks delivered to our door each night.

What I wish someone had given us: newborn portrait session

I really appreciated all the gifts that I got though, even the ones that weren’t my style, I really think it’s the thought that counts!
