If you’re going to wear open-toed shoes you should wear either sandal-toe or open-toe pantyhose/stockings.

That said, in winter I’d go for closed toe every time.

Panty hose are a must…I think the only exception to this is if you’re wearing a floor length gown with open toed shoes…you could always take them off after dinner…and if its cold, you can double up and wear two pairs…

Pantyhose are for my grandmother and mother’s generation. IMO, no one under the age of 50 should be wearing pantyhose anymore.  The exception is opaque tights in the winter.

As for shoes, I’d go with closed toe since it’s the winter.

According to many fashion blogs, and Kate and Pippa, pantyhose are officially back in style!

I would always wear pantyhose with a short dress to a foraml event, unless it was in summer.

    I can’t stand pantyhose!

If you have nice legs, meaning skin wise, no vericose veins etc. I think going sans pantyhose is perfectly fine!

I love hosery. I think a matte black hose with a black dress is really chic!

@Boston Bee: That’s a bit of a generalisation. Tights/pantyhose have become a big fashion item in the UK.

IMO the skin-toned panty hose are strange and give everyone fake-looking Barbie legs. No one should wear those unless they are from that generation when it was cool to have photoshopped legs. I think the lace/crocheted looking pantyhose that are basically accessories for your legs look nice with the right outfit.

You could wear black hose with a black dress and just fancy it up with your hairstyle and jewelry.

Funerals are very conservative (usually) so if you play with your accessories you definitely won’t look like you’re going to a funeral!

If you have nice legs I don’t think you need to wear pantyhose (but I hate hate pantyhose in general). I’d wear a patterned pair of black tights if you’re worried about being cold. The pattern would keep it from looking too funereal.
