I am guessing there isn’t a dress code?

We re doing a morning wedding and listed attire as “Smart Casual” it is in the winter, but knowing our gorup I am guessing most will come in knee length dreses of varying styles and most men in suits or at least dress pants and button ups.

Dress codes other than black tie, which actually is an indication of formality, not attire, are not correct. Guests are presumed to know how to dress themselves for time of day and location. Cocktail length dress is the default unless there is a black tie designation or the venue makes it obvious that it’s casual. No eveningwear. A gown would be inappropriate. People do it, but it is improper for the wedding party to wear gowns for a daytime wedding.

ETA A more casual floor length dress is typically either too casual or too summery for a midwest wedding in March.

Would a maxi dress and a cardigan be too light for the weather?

I would wear what I would wear to a Sunday church service (basically business casual – no jeans, covered shoulders…like a skirt or slacks and a sweater set or nice blouse basically).

I had a afternoon wedding in March & most people just wore Sunday best dresses…..which would include maxis. I love sleeved maxis personally.

weddingmaven :  your replies always make me laugh. Pippa Middleton wore a gown to her sister’s daytime wedding but I suppose you know best.

That said, I don’t think you should wear a gown to this wedding, OP. Knee-length, polished, in a daytime weight and fabric. I’m not a Talbots person but I just snagged this for a friend’s bridal shower (also in March, upscale venue, fancy daytime):

I’d focus on dressing based on the formality of the venue over the time of day.

Knee length dress with a cardigan of some sort if it’s chilly.

+1 to Sunday best / church clothes. So, full length wouldn’t be required, but if you wanted to go full length that seems OK as long as it’s more like a daytime/tea/church dress than like an evening gown.

glitterati :  I said a lot of people do it, didn’t I? Traditionally,  wedding party dresses appropriate for the time of day and venue just like anybody else.

By The Way, Pippa also wore white. Personally, I see nothing wrong with either of these things and obviously in the case of Pippa, her sister approved.
