I have a viewing for a friend of the family to go to tonight 🙁 I am wearing what I plan to wear (I have to be at work ten hours and plan on going straight over unless you bees say my outfit is a faux paus) which is a black knee length jersey dress with a teal cardigan and nude patent pumps. I dont have any accessories on other than my wedding band and engagement ring.
I asked my mom a couple nights ago what to wear and she said not too fancy, just what you’d wear to church. Is my cardigan inappropriate for a wake/viewing? I have never been to one since I was to sick to go to my grandpa’s about five years ago. What about the pumps? Are nude pumps cool?

I think your outfit will be fine, so sorry for your loss.

I think that it’s fine for a viewing/wake, but for a funeral, you should be dressed a little more formal and definitely not teal. I personally only wear black/grey to both funerals and viewings, but people do generally understand when you’re coming straight from work. If you had the time, maybe swing home and get a black cardigan and darker shoes, but if there’s no time, I’d just go with what you’re wearing. The important thing is that you’re going to be there for your friend.

@abbie017: The only black shoes I had were sandals and TOMs . I need to work on that.

That’s absolutely fine for a viewing.

Viewings are less formal. You should be fine.

and no one is going to be concerned about your outfit. They will just be grateful for your support – that’s really what it’s all about.

I think what you described is fine for a viewing. For the funeral, I’d dress a little more formal. I’m really sorry for your loss and honestly, your support means a million times more than what you’re wearing.
