Hello Bees — I would appreciate some help on this clothing dilemma. What do I wear to a wedding in Cape Cod at the end of September?
The afternoon ceremony will be held at a catholic church with the reception to follow at the Groom’s family compound. For reference, the groomsmen will be wearing navy blazers and boat shoes. The invitation also reccomended a sweater for the ladies because apparently it gets chilly in the evening. I’m a little befuddled as to what to wear because of the timing — end of September seems a little late in the season for true summer party dresses — and the fact that the reception may be on grass (wedges?).
Rather than buy any new outfits, I would prefer to use Rent the Runway as I have had success renting dresses before although I am open to any reasonably priced (under $250) dresses. Any ideas? Please post pictures/links if possible! I am 5’7, 130 with a generally hourglass shape so I think I look best in dresses with some definition at the natural waist.
Thanks in advance!

Are you from New England, or is this an out-of-town wedding for you? Weather in late September can vary a lot in New England. Sometimes it still feels like the height of summer, and sometimes it’s freezing in the evening. Cape Cod does tend to have more moderate temperatures, though. I would wear a knee-length or tea-length dress in a not-too-thin fabric. I’d probably wear closed-toe pumps and keep an emergency pair of flats in your car in case the ground is muddy or uneven. Definitely bring a fairly thick cardigan or blazer with you. In late September, some people are already wearing tights with their dresses if it’s cold, so it would be good if you got a dress that works with or without tights, and then you could decide based on weather.

how about this one? https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/erinerinfetherston_dresses/blueseamistdress
You really could do anything filtered under “daytime” there with a cardigan in case it’s chilly

That dress is very pretty! My sister actually rented that same one for a wedding she attended last summer.
lavenderhouse: This is an out of town wedding for me. I live in DC where late September still means daytime temperatures of 80 degrees. I have been to Boston several times, but never to the small island where the reception will be held so your advice is much appreciated.

I agree with all of what LavenderHouse: said, and I also want to add..I would recommend sticking with a dress that is more form fitting than flowy. Being by the ocean, the wind can be both brutal and sudden on the Cape, so I’d hate to be worried about my dress flying up!

Thanks ladies — great advice! I’m a big fan of spanx for keeping everything tucked in and smooth so you probably saved me an oops moment 🙂
