I think that dress is perfect – there is no way that can be considered low cut.

Can’t go wrong with a little black dress and great accessories.

I don’t think that dress is low cut either.  If you’re worried about “too much skin” showing, find a nice statement necklace to add some coverage and bring a blazer.

This all depends on your job and how that dress fits you. If you have a thin/straight boy body, that dress you linked to might be okay. If you are curvy, you are going to look like Joan on Mad Men — which is awesome for date night but not for a work party. Not if your work culture is average to conservative (which I assume it is if the men are wearing suits).

The problem is that men wear the same thing for business occasions and women wear different things for business occasions and social occasions. So a guy at a cocktail party still looks business, while a woman at a cocktail party doesn’t.

In order to present myself as a professional, I’d probably wear a suit, but with a great statement necklace or scarf. That’s what I used to wear to my firm’s holiday parties. What is your role? Often the admins would be in much more “cocktail” type dresses. They were less concerned than I was about making sure to seem professional compared to my (mostly male) colleagues.

What industry do you work in?

I work in tech, and if a woman showed up to a company party wearing a blazer, she would look sorely out of place. Most women are in cocktail dresses of all types, including bodycon. Lots of women in Bebe cocktail dresses, if that gives you any idea. And most men still wear suits to holiday parties, so that’s not an indicator in my field.

The dress you linked is in no way inapropriate IMO, but it would be really helpful to know what industry you’re in.

ETA: if ever unsure, you can always stick with a classic LBD dressed up with shoes/accessories as needed. Can’t go wrong with that.

For a work-related social function, I would stick with sleek and sophisticated. You don’t want to be boring, but you won’t want to risk being risqué…  As other PP have mentioned, you really can’t go wrong with a LBD, something like this, coupled with an interesting cuff bracelet, stud earrings and black pumps:

I’d wear the red dress to work regularly so it wouldn’t be much of a party dress to me. That said I totally think it’s appropriate for work functions. I like both of the other photos posted above.
