I wanted to ask some advice on underwear when trying on dresses… I’ve got my first appointment to try dresses on tomorrow and I have lots of posts saying to wear Spanx or other shaping garments. Well, I don’t have anything like that, nor do I have a strapless white bra with me (moved abroad recently, didn’t bring all the stuff I should have) so….. would white boy shorts with black bows and a black strapless bra be okay do you think? I’m thinking at least they’ll be modest and I’ve read that most places have bras that they give you. Have you guys found that to be the case?
I think I just need my mind put at rest so I can feel excited rather than nervous at the prospect of trying on dresses, lol.

The dress place had a strapless bra for me. I did wear spanx because I didn’t want to just be in underwear but if you’re comfortable in your skin, wear what you want (or don’t want)!

I’ve tried on dresses in anything, for real. I wore a regular bra one time. As long as you have underwear on, you should be fine. Strapless is always a plus.
Most dresses are so thick, you won’t see the black anyway.

Yeah this never crossed my mind when I went dress shopping lol I wore ugly blac k& gold panties and a pink strapless bra the first time LOL. I needed to do laundry ASAP and thats all I could find.

I just wore my regular cotton underwear. Most places I went to had a corset/longline bra type thing for me to wear, but when I could remember, I brought my own regular strapless bra (and I only have a black one too and it was fine). I’d recommend bringing your strapless bra just because the ones they have might not fit you that great, but if they do, then you could use theirs.

Honestly my goal was to find a dress that had enough support that I could go with just undies on the big day, it’s going to be warm in LA in September and the less I have to wear the cooler it’ll be. So I did wear spanx for the first few times and the salons had bra’s to try stuff on with but most of the time I just went braless. The last round of trying on I went with just plain white or nude undies and I noticed a very slight difference but VERY little. I figured if the dress looked good with no bra (and my 34DD’s) and plain undies then whatever I choose to do the day of as far as undergarments will be great and only add to the look. It’s worked, I’ve found a dress that looks awesome with no bra and just undies now I have room to play with. I’m getting a dress with corsetting so there’s LOTS of support in it and I think that helps a huge amount! I hope that helps your search.

I went wearing Spanx and a strapless bra. When I tried on bridesmaids dresses for my friend’s wedding, this was perfect, because I knew that was what I would likely be wearing under the dress, and I wanted the measurements and fits to note this (Spanx actually make me wider, but smoother, so stuff definetly looks better on me, but the fit is different).
Wedding dress shopping I did the same thing, but they gave me a bustier and a slip to wear. I definetly felt more comfortable wearing Spanx (like little flesh colored bike shorts!), especially when someone I didn’t know was helping me get dressed. I think going in with strong foundation garments is good in case they don’t end up giving you stuff to wear (like my friend who bought her dress at a bridal warehouse – they gave her a good nod when she was prepared with a strapless bra under her t-shirt). Color doesn’t matter much, but I wouldn’t do anything too thick or that might get in the way.

When I went to try on wedding dresses I wore a pair of underwear from Victoria’s Secret that were nude and did not have seems. I also wore a strapless bra. When I got there, I found that I ended up ditching the strapless bra because I really didn’t need it. However, I am small chested, so the bra really wasn’t necessary for me.
As far as wearing spanx, I chose not to because my friend had worn them when she went to try on her dress, and had complained of seems showing through the more heavy satin dresses she had tried on. I suppose it depends on how tight of a dress you are wearing.
I tried on fit and flair styles, and you would have been able to see the seems of spanx in them because they are fitted tightly down to your mid-thigh (by seems, I mean in some cases the shorts will ride up, and you can see the out-line of them running across the bottom of your cheeks).

most places have them garments you will need for trying.. however do bring your stuff just incase, and BRING SHOES! you won’t need the exact stuff your wearing until your actuall alterations fittings. 🙂 good luck and post pics!

I didn’t wear a strapless bra, I just borrowed a corset from them. Also, it doesn’t matter what color your undies are, if they show through it isn’t your wedding so it’s not like you will have pictures of it.

It really doesn’t matter. You can bring heels if you plan to wear heels on your wedding day, but the dress will be way too long no matter what, so it really doesn’t matter. Also, unless you are for sure planning to wear spanx, no need to bring them. Also don’t go and buy a very expensive long line bra if you plan to even wear a bra because it may not be the right kind for the dress you haven’t even decided on yet. Bridal shops have everything you need in terms of borrowing heels and long line bras.
I went alone to each of the three stores and only wore my undies. I’m not wearing spanx or a bra, so this worked perfectly.

I agree with Mrs Louboutin-just some nude undies. I wouldn’t wear super bright undies, but other than that, wait until you choose your dress to buy anything. I bought some spanx for dress shopping and they dont work with the dress I chose, and were really a waste of money.

both places i went to i just wore regular underwear and i went with no bra the first store because i have basically no boobs but the second place they gave me a bra.

I didn’t wear anything special.. strapless bra, that was about it. You don’t need the spanx really until your first fitting. If you really want to you can get it, but you won’t know what will work best with your dress until after you have one..
