I’m nervous for my shower! I have a lot of strange gifters in my family. I’m glad we’re registered at the US Treasury for our wedding.

P.S. sometimes I’d rather get nothing than some crap someone threw in a box with no thought behind it! Somehow you end up toting it around half your life because you feel bad throwing it away.

I have another OMGosh gift!

One of my friends told me I was going to get ‘a very useful gift’ so I thought it was something for the house or something like that…..

Instead she gives me her old, used chi iron and says she noticed I had been using it a few times and thought I shoud have it, since she can’t use it on her new hair cut anyway….

yeah… I had stopped using that because it was FRYING my hair!

At our shower two weeks ago, we got a swan soup toureen.  The body of the swan is the part that would hold the soup. The lid is basically the back, shoulders and head of the swan.  The handle is the gentle curve of the swans neck.

This wasn’t a gift for me but a good family friend and her husband got a basket made of chocolate in the shape of a swan, w/ chocolate inside!
Her husband tried to defend them, saying they had just purchased a chocolate factory. We said, so then it’s tacky and FREE!!?!??

Lunapark – I’ll take that bowl off your hands 😉

The worst gift we got was a scoentology booklet on how to prevent attacks, illnesses and injuries. Talk about bad ju-ju!

The second worst was probably champagne flutes with a busty blonde bride and a surfer dude groom painted on the sides. *Sigh* people really need to understand that people geting married really don’t want anything "bride and groom" themed.

oh goodness these are amazing!! I’ve already had one shower and thank goodness those people are sane and normal haha didn’t receive anything weird from that one… I did get one goodie bag full of dollar store stuff but it was all useful and can’t wait for the honeymoon to use some of it…. if you catch my drift…. you know

But my bigger Bridal Shower is this weekend and most of the people attending I would say I shouldn’t worry about. But my Fiance does have one Aunt (she won’t be there) who gives REALLY random gifts!! So beware…. if anything happens this weekend I"ll definitely let you know.

Most of the stuff we got at our shower was on the registry and if not it was nice.  But we did get one kind of random gift.  Somebody got us a step ladder…not really sure how much use that will get yet!  I am interested to see now what interesting gifts will come at the wedding!

Ha ha, I feel much better about my "huh?" gift now! No bongs or lawn gnomes or naked people sculptures, yet (although my younger brother might come up with something pretty random, I’ll keep you posted).

Last night my Fiance and I received a box from a family of 4 who all RSVP’d "yes" to the wedding.  The wife is always bragging about her designer handbags, insists on new diamonds every Christmas, and told my mom that the wedding gowns I was looking at were going to be "cheap" and "not very nice" (she wore a Vera Wang at her wedding 15 years ago).

They got us … napkins.  Nice napkins, ones off our registry, but they clearly picked the cheapest thing on there, and they didn’t even write anything on the card except their names.  Thanks for the thought, I guess!

Most of our gifts so far were from the registry or something similar (you know, towels, kitchen utensils, etc.). My FI’s mom have us a whole bunch of random gifts, though: an old book from the early nineteen hundreds (because she remembered me saying that I thought old books were neat — which I do), a beanie baby bear with silver stars all over (chosen because its name was "Begginings"), matching sweaters from Mexico (I don’t remember what you call them) for my Fiance and I to wear, plus a hand-woven blanket from Mexico (from their trip there 20 years ago), two books for my Fiance (she used to work at a bookstore, by the way), and a crystal bowl that was her grandma’s. Honestly, though, I enjoyed how each gift had a story with it and were chosen with a lot of thought, even if they weren’t new, so they were some of my favorites :-). The rest were useful and exciting because they were for our house, but I knew that she was thinking of who we are when she put together her gift bag, so it made me smile :-).

It’s a little early for us – haven’t received any gifts yet, but for my from my 1st wedding:

My cousin who showed up with his kids in tow, to a very formal wedding reception w/ no kids invited (their names were NOT on the invitation), I received one of those horrible 5 x 7 porcelain picture frames with pink flowers on it. You know, the kind you get as a free gift when you buy something at Christmas time. ???

For a bridal shower gift from my exMIL: a cookbook that was a free gift from her insurance co. This from the woman who insisted on inviting 40 people we’d never met from her office to the wedding. Again, ???

Hahaha I loved reading through this…can’t wait until I have my own story to add.  Sometimes people just make you wonder what in the world they were thinking.

These are so great my story pales in comparison!

@chelseamorning – That is so awesome! I’m kind of jealous of your giant parrot mirror. 🙂

@worcesterbride – My fiancé is also southern, and I can so picture his mom doing that! Those southern mamas and their little boys …

Not for a wedding, but for Christmas, my gma got me a little animated singing doll called “Hip, Swingin’ Santa.” I was in college at the time. She has a reputation for giving off-the-wall gifts, so it became a family joke and now Hip Swingin’ Santa visits a new lucky person each Christmas! We sign and date the bottom and everything so you can trace Santa’s history. 🙂
