@sarahg8r:  I’m not engaged or anything but I know my SO has a ring picked out. I’m not sure if he had it in mind before, but as far as I know he went one afternoon to check out rings and found something he liked and that was it. He’s shown me what it looks like, and I love it!!!

He may not even want to take you ring shopping beforehand– my husband picked out my ring and surprised me with the whole thing.  What I would recommend is make sure the closest women in your life KNOW your preferences, maybe even go and try a few on to get ideas while he’s away.  Send them some pictures and info on what you like.  That way, if he does want to surprise you completely, he can have some resources (in my case my SIL was perfect for this, she told him exactly what I wanted and even went shopping with him a few times to help him find the perfect ring).

If he DOES want to take you shopping, then just wait and see, sometimes you’ll walk into the first store and fall in love, sometimes it can take months before you have that “perfect” feeling. It took Darling Husband 6 months to find my dream ring, but when he finally found  it, the shop he was in actually had all of the “final 3” before he made a decision.  Most non-chain jewelry stores have a style, so once you find a store  that matches your style, it’ll be easy from there.  The larger chain stores are great if you don’t know where you want to begin because they’ll have a bigger variety to help narrow down your search, so it’s sometimes good to  start there if you really have no idea, or if you just want to try a whole bunch.

@julietteeliza:  +1.

My Darling Husband surprised me with the ring.  He did all the research and budgeting without me knowing about it.  He had asked my little sister, his coworkers/friends, and his step mom for advice.

I don’t really believe in pressuring a guy and setting timelines and stuff unless you’re basically ready to leave if he doesn’t propose. My Fiance is NOT a planner at all and is on a very tight budget, but he planned everything related to our engagement without any hinting from me. He surprised me to take me ring shopping and then surprised me by proposing 6 months later. I never asked for a timeline or hinted at all and it worked out well. We had been together for 3 years when we went ring shopping and had lived together for 1.5 years. If you can wait, I wouldn’t say anything and let him move at his own pace.
