I think it’s awesome that you’re going to spend $200! And I definitely agree with the PP–don’t buy a bunch of little things. Get one big thing.
The one thing my husband and I desperately wanted off our registry was the stroller. (Keep in mind that a travel system is probably going to be more than $200 depending on the brand.) Our stroller was $400, so when my parents bought it for us, I was SO excited.
The thing “I” (my husband didn’t care about this one so much) really wanted off my registry was my diaper bag–I was so excited when I received it! It was around $200, and is something I will use for a very long time and can use right away.

Another item that is a sure-fire winner is a baby swing. I was SO excited about our baby swing! We set it up immediately so I could stare at the cuteness!

(Come to think about it, I was super excited about ALL of the big items on my baby registry, but these three were the most exciting to open!)

I would stay away from the breast pump. I would have been weirded out if my friend bought me a breast pump, and I’m still not even sure if I’m going to use the darn thing–I hope I can just BF.

Since you guys are super close, why don’t you ask? My BFF (best friends since we were 11 and godmother to our baby) just told me that she and her boyfriend want to gift us something big… whatever we need, they want to get for us. I was pretty floored, but super appreciative. I’m asking for a stroller… a really nice one.

As others have said, get a big item vs. many small things. You can try to sign up for coupons at the stores that she regsters at to help you get something that is pricey. And if she registers at Buy Buy Baby, they accept Bed Bath Beyond coupons.

The big items on my registry that I would LOVE to get are the video monitor ($170), the stroller travel system ($399), convertible carseat ($140).

Can I just say that you’re an AWESOME friend?!  It’s so heartwarming to see you being so excited, looking at presents for her before she’s registered, and wanting to buy a “big ticket item”… how sweet!

That is so awesome of you.  My friend was like that… she called and wanted me to tell her what I needed.  She was very generous.

I never registered for any of my pregnancies.  My 1st, everyone was generous with the bigger ticket things and us being 1st time parents and young were clueless so we were really lucky and very blessed.  The one thing we didn’t get that we ended up running out to buy and turned into a lifesaver was the swing.  We paid like $100.

With my other 2 babies, everyone was just super generous with lots of clothes and diapering and bath essentials.  As usual, my fil gifted us a crib… that is one big ticket item you can buy that she will most likley need.

This time around, hubby and I spent almost $1000 buying all the baby essentials we needed/wanted.  The one thing we don’t have yet that I want but probably won’t get is a video monitor.  I’ll probably just get a regular monitor.  Also we spent $400 on our travel system…. it would have been super nice if someone bought that for us but I am glad we were able to get it on our own.

You have gotten some great suggestions of what to get her…. have fun shopping.  Baby shopping is the best.

The big expensive stuff. EVERYONE gets you adorable clothes, which are adorable, But I was SO grateful for the big things. Saved me a ton of money to put towards diapers. I was lucky enough to get a bed set, a crib (grandparents had already told me they would though, SO nice of them), the car seat, and a pack n play. I cried I was so grateful.

The item I was most hoping for was the travel system and the Motorola video monitor. The travel system ended up going on sale and with a coupon we went ahead and ordered it, but the monitor after 20% off coupon at Buy Buy Baby will be $200. I’d also say the breast pump but most insurance are now required to cover those so I will be getting mine through them.

I am a NICU nurse, so most of our momma’s have baby showers while their babies are still admitted. I hear from a lot of them that they miss out on the most important items and just receive a lot of diapers, clothes, and blankets instead. I would recommend buying/going in on a carseat/travel system, crib, or even a breast pump. I don’t know if she’s expressed if she is planning on breast feeding, but a good breast pump can be a lifesaver once she has to go back to work.

Hope that helps! Congrats to your friend 🙂

@TwoStatesBride:  I would appareciate anything off my registry to be honest. Just make sure if it is a big ticket item, it is specificly the brand and model she wants.. For me, when I do get pregnant, there is a specific car seat I like (about $230) and the stroller I want is a different brand, and costs about $500. Personally, I wouldn’t want someone to come up to me and tell me “Hey! I want to be the one to buy your stroller, but I’m only dropping $200 so find one in that price range!”. I don’t know what her situation is of course, but for myself, I don’t mind spending the $500 on a stroller I want, but if my mom told me she would take care of buying those things but then get mad at the price I’d be annoyed and tell her not to worry about it. Gift cards are awesome as well. My sisters told me they would have loved to receive a massage or pedicure certificate..and thats something others might not think of!

Cradle swing is an awesome idea!
