(Closed) What were your punishments as a kid?

When I was really, really, really bad I had to pull my pants down and lie still on my stomach to wait for my spanking. The anticipation was way worse than the spanking itself.

I vaguely remember privileges being taken away, but I was a pretty good kid that never got into trouble.

I was once grounded until the snow melted. I lived in NY and it was November. In March the snow was almost gone and I was getting ready to celebrate my freedom, we got a freak snowstorm. Yeah. That blew.

I got spanked a few times if I was really bad. I used to slam doors, until my parents threatened to take the door off the hinges, LOL! I can’t remember if they ever actually did though. My mom was great with “the look” but neither me or my sister were horrible, so we didn’t get punished too much. I never got grounded, but I’d get lectured the odd time.

If I cussed or mouthed back, I got a little drop of dishsoap from my mom’s finger on my tongue.

I also got a few spankin’s if I were exceptionally terrible.  I did get hit on the bottom with a belt when I was in the 3rd grade for stealing and lying about it.  It was over the pants and really didn’t hurt, but I remember being so ashamed and crying.  I never did that again.

Once I got older, I would get grounded from going out/the internet/talking on the phone if my grades weren’t a C- or better until the next report card (2 months I believe).  Being grounded was the worst!

ETA-  My Future Mother-In-Law tells me that her punishment to her sons when they would misbehave would be to wash walls.  I thought that was pretty awesome (though would have hated it as a kid)!

I was given the choice of a whipping or being grounded and always chose whipping. Daddy could never do it though and he’d put the belt away and tell us we were grounded anyway.

My parents were very, very strict. Think standard etiquette, excellent posture, and finishing school (yes). I didn’t act up much, mostly because I never had the opportunity to misbehave — they caught me and disciplined using timeouts, favorite things taken away, or general do-not-do instruction well before the bad stuff happened. I had to adapt to a family in “society” pretty quickly, so I guess I’ll never know if I deserved any of the punishments I did receive.

However, I do have the best not-very-serious punishment, and still use it as an anecdote and inside joke with my mother:

If I was getting too frisky or energetic while indoors, my mother would warn me that she’d make me “go run off that energy outside!” usually in the rain or snow. I never thought she’d follow through…

But on a particularly frigid and snowy Sunday, I guess my five-year-old self bugged her one too many times while she was balancing her checkbook. She put the pen down, grabbed my down coat and boots, and said, “PUT THESE ON. NOW.” I did, and she brought me to the front door.

“You’re going to run all the way around this house, THREE TIMES. I won’t let you back in until you do. Now GO RUN OFF YOUR ENERGY!!!!!”

And… I ran. Picture a tiny little pipsqueak of a child trying to run through hip-deep snow, giggling hysterically as her mother watched from the front door. By the time I finished one lap, my mother was laughing so hard she could barely speak. She called to me and told me to come inside, where she warmed me up with hot chocolate.

I never did get that rambunctious inside again. Best. Punishment. Ever. 😀

It depended heavily on the infraction and who was doing the punishing…

my dad would spank us, open-handed- but this was very rare.  Maybe 2 times in my entire life.

Mom would send us to our room, or take away tv or phones.  She was the pushover.

My uncle would make us sit in an invisible chair against a wall.  It was funny for the first like 2 minutes, then it was awful.  To this day I credit my strong legs to my uncle!

My step-dad, well, he had some anger issues.  He would yell at us (like screaming in our faces) that we were stupid or fuck-ups or whatever.  He once hit my sister so hard with a ping-pong paddle that the handle broke.  He would spill something then yell at me to clean it up.  It was pretty awful, but since my mom is such a softie, she never stood up for us.

I moved out at 18 because I couldn’t handle living with him anymore.  He has since been through therapy and on a mood stabilizing medication… my youngest sister just graduated high school and he is absolutely NOTHING like he used to be.  I don’t think he’s ever laid a hand on my youngest sister.

I should clarify that I’m no worse for the wear.  It made me tougher, and I’ve been able to get through tough situations in my life because they weren’t nearly as bad as being an already awkward teenager who was called stupid and ugly on a regular basis.  Everything since then has been pretty mild!

@bakerella:  My sister was notorious for slamming her bedroom door.  She actually had her door taken off its hindges for a whole month as punishment for it!  Haha

My dad removed the door handle at one point in my early teens as a punishment for locking the door during arguments with my parents. I also got homeschooled for a year as punishment for getting “bad” grades (I don’t really think they were that bad…it was probably Bs) & hiding my report card from my parents. Yeah, extreme. I also got my fair share of spankings & groundings.

Well I was a pretty good kid, and for the most part, it was just regular spankings and taken away cell phones, and tv. Lol.

But my poor husband….he tells me stories of when his mom would wake him up in the middle of the night, yank him by his ankle, and just start spanking him out of no where. Then she would have all 3 kids play outside in the yard in the morning, locked the door, and they would be out there all day until their dad came home from work. They would be so hungry at lunch time but she wouldn’t open the door because she was asleep and they were forced to eat pecans from the pecan tree….. so sad! I call that abuse but my husband swears it made him and his brothers stronger! Yeah….right!

Ah I got the good ol` soap in the mouth once when I was really small.I cant remember what I did but it was damn horrble so I never did it again haha. We also got smacked on the back of the legs,or clipped round the ear, grounded, privilages taken away etc.

I remember one time my brother refused to clean up his room, and my mum was fed up of going in and treading on his video games (apparently they hurt to tread on with bare feet) so my mum went and put some shoes on,went into my brothers room, and held one foot over the game. She told my brother to tidy up or she would stomp and break his game.To which he replied “you wouldnt dare” So my mum dared.

Years later she says it so wasnt worth it for all the screaming and crying she had off him for days after. She wasnt even going to stand on it until he dared her too!
