oh my gosh! I probably would not be able to accept it. I dont know though- that is awesome at the same time. I would call her or take them out to dinner and talk about it!

@retreadbride: I think this is the right response. She might insist on you just keeping the entire amount. If this happens thank her profusely and do something really, really nice for her.

Wow what a generous offer!

I would call her and offer what you stated above. However, she will probably insist and then it is proper etiquette to just let it go and thank her profusely and make a trip out to spend some time with her soon!!!

What a wonderful friend you have there!

I agree with MidwestBride! If you are uncomfortable accepting the gift (totally understandable), tell her it’s incredibly generous, but you can’t accept it. No one is offended by that. If she still insists, which is likely, thank her again and accept it – it would be rude to refuse the gift if she is very serious about giving it. Just do something really, really nice for her in the future!

Just accept it!  She wanted to give you this wonderful gift, and the polite thing to do is be gracious and accept it.  It’s her choice to give it and you shouldn’t feel guilty, feel overwhelmed by joy that you have such a wonderful friend!

This happened to us and we refused. We thanked the person but explained we weren’t comfortable since we fully planned on paying it back, it was the pricipal of the matter.
