From Dec. 23 to Jan. 2, both Darling Husband and I are not working. We just went on our honeymoon in Sept. so we don’t have the itch to travel. But because we plan to start trying for kids in Jan., we feel we should go somewhere since we have the time off. Unfortunately, airfare to anywhere is expensive at that time.
I always want to go to Spain and he want to go to Paris. But I hate cold and it’s very cold in Europe right now. Another option is to just do short trips to local towns (though we don’t have anywhere in particular we really want to go). Or we can save money and just stay home.
What would you do in our situation?

I would take some short trips to local places. We are thinking about doing the same thing just because cost prohibits us from going anywhere that requires a flight 🙂

I wouldnt bother with quick local trips, those to me are easy weekend things that can be done easily wiht kids. I would either go to Spain or Paris and bundle up, or find somewhere else warmer that you two can go. That’s a a great long stretch of time off, I’d defintely try to take advantage of it and go somewhere that otherwise wouldnt be easy to go.

I’m biased because I love to travel and although I am not a fan of the cold I suck it up for something huge like a European vacation. That’s just me though. =)

i would do spain – i returned from Paris 2 weeks ago and there was a good day (no cloud cover/and sun) to 2 cold days (cold, low cloud/hazzy so city views/photography wasnt the best)
if you do go to Paris avoid the weekend – there were people and queues everywhere but on tuesday onwards i really noticed less people

Go to Europe! We were just in Paris the exact same timeframe as you last year & had a BLAST! Yes, it was chilly, but just pack gloves, coats, and warm scarfs/hats and snuggle up with your honey as you sightsee. In fact, I have also been to Paris in the dead of summer & actually enjoyed the winter vacation much more.
Here we are by the Eiffel Tower NYE 2011:

If you can afford it, I vote Europe. All the other options you can do when you have kiddos!

Spain is amazing!!! Probably not nearly as cold as Paris, either, but if you have the chance to do both then I vote for both!

…that’s my vote I ADORE Europe

I voted for the Big Trip! We’re going on our Honeymoon in June and will probably try to sneak in another big trip before we start TTC (a few months later). Go while you can!!

If you don’t want to go to a cold climate, perhaps you could consider a trip to the Caribbean. Even if you possibly just had a beach vacation on your honeymoon in September, you could still enjoy a romantic beach vacation during the cold weather (assuming its cold where you live now.) However, as you mentioned, travel over the holidays is usually very expensive.

IF you go to paris, get a brass lock and engrave you and your DH’s name on it – on the bridge near the lourve and one behind notre dame are hundreds of locks people have put there. i wish i had known as its something i would have done

Europe! You’ll regret it if not. The first time I went to Paris was during the winter time. It was cold, sure, but it’s better then sightseeing in the burning hot while you’re sweating. Plus, you’ll be with your husband in PARIS and SPAIN. It’ll be a great thing to do together before you get pregnant and don’t know when you can go again. Have fun!

It’s not been all that cold so far this winter in Europe 🙂 And Paris is supposed to be lovely at Christmas (it doesn’t get super hot anyway, South of France is better for sun 🙂 )

wow. That’s a lot of vote for Europe.
What’s a reasonable airfare to Paris and Barcelona around Christmas?
Recommendation on must see/do?
