Hi hive! I’m more of a lurker than a poster, but I really need someone’s opinion on this!
I currently work in a job that I absolutely love, and which allows me to be extremely flexible in which hours I choose to work. I make enough to live somewhat comfortably, but which is not enough to fulfil some of the plans I have for my husband and I’s future (moving to a house instead of a townhouse, taking time off when I decide to have children).
I have gotten a job offer for a similar sales job, but in a MUCH smaller company (35 employees vs. 20,000). It pays almost double what I am making now. I worry that my job would be much less stable, as well as being a job that I might not love as much as the one I have. I would even describe the job I have now as my “dream job”. Would you give up your dream job to make more money, but which would allow you to acheive other life goals?

I would keep my dream job.

I voted to keep the job you love even though it pays less. It all depends on how you look at your career, though. I am NOT a ladder climber… I want a job that pays the bills and I enjoy doing, that lets me live the life I want.
My husband on the other hand, is a definite ladder climber and is always aware of new, higher paying opportunities.
It all depends on whats important to you and what you value out of your job.

If you have your dream job, I would stay. Making more money in a job that you hate, or always being afraid youre going to lose your job is not a way to live. I did it for way too long!

I don’t know that I would give up my dream job just for the money. I’m lucky enough that I make great money in my dream job. But I guess you have to look at a bunch of things. Do you think you will like the new job quite a bit (if not love), or is it going to be something that you will hate going to everyday after a while. Is there room to move up at all in your current company? Bc if you can move up in it then there is a future that would give you more money and I would definitely take that into consideration. Whatever decision you make I’m sure will be great. Good Luck in deciding.

I’m shocked that the poll is split down the middle right now. Dream job, hands down. What good is a big house if you don’t have the time and flexibility to enjoy it? What good is more money if you don’t enjoy your job, which you spend over half your waking hours at/thinking about/commuting to/from? Especially since it sounds like this new job is not as stable as your current job. This is a no-brainer to me.
If you are really in a financial bind (which it doesn’t sound like you are), could you talk to your boss about a salary increase? You may have some leverage if you tell him/her that you’ve been offered a job that pays double what you’re making right now, and that you want to stay with this company because you love it there but financially it’s a tough position to be in.

I said to keep your dream job but I see now that it’ll stop you from staying home with your kids which is something you want to do. That would be a deal breaker for me. Weigh the things your missing out on vs. the flexibility and see if your current job is really as flexible as you think it is.

Thanks everyone! I think I am leaning towards staying in the job I have, and some of the comments have solidified that feeling.
@tabbatha – there is room to move up, but because there are so many employees, it is harder to stand out.
When I really think of it, I don’t mind waiting a little longer for a house, children, etc. I’m only 26, so I definitly have some time.
I have a lot of friends who are ladder-climbers, so it might be that I feel as if I should do the same as they are!

If I already had my dream job, I would stay there. If you were contemplating leaving an unstable job that you may not love for your dream job and less money, it would be a tougher call.
