I am a nurse, I work in primary care which means all the nurses work a 8-5 kind of shift. We are also open until 8pm. Well, a few months back, I agreed to work until 8pm three days per week. Their only option for me, shift-wise was 8am-8pm three days per week and 8-12:45 one day per week.
This is fine and dandy, I took it for the extra time on Mondays with Fiance. He works second shift, so other than that I don’t see him all week.
The real issue is that I don’t sleep. I can’t sleep until Fiance gets home. So I’m getting about 5.5 hours of sleep each night and I just can’t operate off that. I approached my boss about maybe coming in later on my 8pm days and working longer on the fourth day to make up the hours.
They told me no, because a nurse was being trained and it wouldn’t be fair to leave the trainee and trainer alone on my team. Okay, fine.
Fast forward, trainee is now on her own, which means theres 3 of us on the team all day. It’s more than enough coverage. Now I’m revisiting the topic. Do I:
1) Go to my boss again about changing my hours? (i.e. 4 ten hour shifts so I can come in later and sleep).
2) Look for a new job with evening hours.
It put a target on my back last time. They really were NOT friendly at all or really willing to work with me on it and there has been tension since. I know not sleeping is really my problem, but no other nurse in my workplace is working 12 hour shifts and no other nurse wants to work until 8pm, so I feel like they should work with me at least a little bit.
Any opinions for me on what to do?
