happyispretty90 :  Well that’s awfully polite of you….even if you deliberately avoided answering every single question I posed.

Sigh. why do I even bother?

I agree that it would be very presumptuous to assume someone (or an entire family) were illegal. How would you know unless you had access to their paperwork? Which normally one shouldn’t….how would you “prove” this? Even if that was talked about, it wouldnt be proof.

I’m confused by the purpose of this thread – OP, are you trying to find people who WOULD turn illegal immigrants in and learn why someone would be motivated to do such a thing? If so, perhaps you should narrow your question a bit more (not trying to be catty, just trying to be helpful).

I think many people would get defensive about this question because, at least from my side of the fence, it would be so incredibly wrong to turn someone in for the simple fact that he/she is an illegal immigrant. It’s a particularty touchy, sensitive, and controversial topic.

mrstodd2bee :  I’m also Canadian and have an ok grasp on it so I’ll chime in. We have multiple types of visas for people for different countries. Some are working visas, study visas, visitors, family sponsor, asylum seeker, etc. Some can be renewed, some employers will sponsor renewals for skilled workers, etc. If you enter the first time with a renewable visa and extend or renew enough consecutive times, you can apply for permanent residency. Once you have your permanent residency for long enough and stay in the country long enough, you can apply for citizenship.

We don’t hear about deportations often, but I’m sure they happen once in a while. It is just really easy to cross the border when your visa is about to expire and then re-enter on a new one. You’d have to be an idiot to not just do that and risk deportation.

Unlike the US, a couple does not have to be married for one spouse to sponsor the other to immigrate. LGBTQ couples are also able to sponsor a spouse to get residency.

Anyway, Thats putting it in the simplest terms. There is a lot more to it, but suffice to say, Canada is MUCH more welcoming to immigration than the US is.

Being judgmental of someone for calling ICE on an documented family hurts no one. Being judgmental of someone for being in the United States without legal status and then calling ICE on them hurts that family. It’s a false equivalency.

Being liberal does not require tolerance of intolerance.

Another Canadian here and also an immigrant, came when I was 13 and now a Canadian citizen. Agree that we don’t hear or have a lot of illegal immigrants here and I don’t even think it’s ann issue. Deportations are only for criminals. Anyways, what does it mean though to be undocumented? Can someone explain this to me?

happyispretty90 :

Nope,  never. Tho tbh, I might go and interfere if I thought a woman  or child  was being mistreated . I’d  do that immigrant or not  ,  of course. What I mean is, I wouldn’t let cultural issues stop me .

PS Australian here.

mrs_mnv :  “undocumented”means being illegally in the USA… It’s just a “nice” way of saying it..

Canada is apparently having issues as well…Trudeau there is “cracking down” on those who come there undocumented/illegally.
