I’m already married, but I wouldn’t have wanted yellow gold, colored stones, marquise, heart shaped, princess, or a solitaire.
I’m already married, but I wouldn’t have wanted yellow gold, colored stones, marquise, heart shaped, princess, or a solitaire.
The two most important no-no’s for me were:
No yellow gold
No plain bands
No square centers that are divided into 4 squares to make up 1 stone
Not the biggest fan of clusters
Nothing art deco or too out there
No tension settings!
No pearl or soft gems as the center
No heart cut diamonds/gems!
The only two things I absolutely did not want were diamonds and yellow gold.
I did not want yellow gold, emerald (only because our budget is not good enough to get a good quaity)/marquis/oval/pear/solitaire cuts, I wanted the ring to be diamond because I wanted traditional (I have an obsession for gaudy costume gemstone rings already), or anything that was an heirloom or not bought specifically for me.
I’m amazed at how many people are adamantly against yellow gold: for me it was the only option.
I just couldn’t have loved a ring that wasnt yellow gold, and had a bezel setting. i would have felt that square/angular stones, cathedral settings and anything other than a one stone ring weren’t really ‘me’ but I would have loved the ring for its meaning.
so bees, I’m really interested to know, why doesn’t yellow gtold tickle your fancy?
I think colored gems/stones are nice on others, but personally it’s not for me. I am also not a lover of yellow or rose gold, even though it suits my complexion more. I don’t like oval or marquise cut, don’t like splitshank (I have chubby fingers so this would be a nightmare for me), and not too big on halo or baguette style rings. I also like the center stone of my ring to be 1-2 carats in size, but personally the bigger the better.
TLDR: My ideal ring is 1-2ct+ TCW (diamond), center stone + smaller sidestones, preferably thicker white gold band, solitaire loved.
– No yellow gold. It’s just not very flattering on my skin tone.
– No clusters. Good thing the SO hates them.
– Not too expensive. We could always upgrade in the future when we are more settled.
– No colored stones. I would be fine with a CZ, moissanite, or diamond. Colored stones are just not my style for any piece of jewelry. Although I love them on others!
I also told him that I would much prefer a square cut (princess or cushion) over a round cut. But I would have still loved a round cut.

I didn’t want WHITE gold, b/c I hate the idea of rhodium plating.
No marquis, cluster, quad, heart diamond. No CZ.
And absolutely NO big box chain store. I wanted my friend who’s a goldsmith to make my ring.
@LeonardLady: I agree on the lopsided band ring. I also don’t want anything other than a round or oval cut and I would prefer a silver metal (white gold, palladium, or platinum) although, depending on the style I might be ok with yellow gold. Also I want either a white or blue stone, and either a solitaire or halo (so no three-stone rings or anything like that. My fingers are too small to pull them off)
I didn’t have a lot of specific do-not-wants. Rather, I just gave him specific examples of what I DID want. But honestly, I went to a jewelry store recently to get our wedding bands and I looked at the engagement rings, and they’re ALL gorgeous. Seriously. Clusters, marquise, solitaires, halos, yellow, white, rose. They’re all sparkly and beautiful. I wanted to take them all home, even though I love what I have! 🙂
My only no-no this time around was no solitare.
My first ring was a solitare, which I THOUGHT I had wanted since i was a little girl, but the reality was I just felt like people would compare my diamond size, which wasn’t huge since we weren’t rich, to their own. True or not, this time I requested for unique instead of classic.Although I don’t think I’d ever say no to a proposal because of the ring lol
No white metals (Yellow Gold girl here)
No thick bands
No halos
No big rocks.
