FI’s brother got married in September. They had a teeny, tiny wedding (I think there were 13 or so of us) because FI’s brother’s wife’s dad (whoa, that’s a mouthful) is very sick and they weren’t sure how long he was going to last.
Anyway, FI’s mother decided to throw them a reception of sorts for the extended family and their friends. It’s next weekend. The trouble is, I have NO idea what to wear!
It’s a cocktail party, during the day (12-4 or so) and it’ll be COLD (we live in New England). I don’t want to overdress, but I definitely don’t want to underdress either. I asked Future Mother-In-Law what the dress code was and she said “Oh, you know. Not casual, but not too fancy, either.” Because that helps.
So, Bees, I’m turning to you! What would you wear to this kind of event? And FWIW, FI’s family runs with a fairly formal crowd.

Maybe a knee length simple dress with dark hose and nice pair of black shoes and a sweater

annb9: I would wear a classic long sleeved dress, with hose and pumps.
You could throw in a splash of color with a colorblock dress.

annb9: Yep, like PP said. Or since it’s during the day, you could probably wear a suit (skirt or pants) with a slightly flashy top. With some jewelry and a pair of heels (if you wear them) that seems appropriate for a noon-4 cocktail party.

maybe a nice dressy coat?

I would dress in what used to be called semi-formal or cocktail attire. The weather doesn’t really have any bearing on my choice as I assume the reception will be inside. You can take off your coat and exchange boots for shoes when you get there.

Thanks, all! I just didn’t know if there was a difference between day semi-formal and night semi-formal. I also wasn’t totally sure about black – I didn’t want to look too somber! I’m going shopping tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll find something.

I would just wear a classy cocktail dress, sheer black tights and pumps. Simple jewelry nothing too glitzy like you might in evening.

You can’t ever go wrong with a little black dress! Or any color party dress. I would avoid the “going to the office” look or a long dress. A knee length or just above with sleeves or a fitted cardigan would be perfect. Don’t wear pants! I am not a fan of pants for anything dressy.

Fellow New Englander here! It has been so cold out! but I’m assuming the reception will be inside so as long as you have a nice coat you can wear any cocktail dress really. Something knee length, but not too flashy or glitzy. Nice pair of boots (with heel is a plus) to pair with some dark colored tights. I also like to stay away from black for weddings or other fun events. Try a nice seasonal color – a maroon if you want to go darker, or I’m always a fan or blush and gold for any season!
