Since we have to do a 100% remodel on our home I am gathering ideas. While looking through the comparables in the area I notice that most of them do not have anything more then oak or maple cabinets with a clear coat on them. The bathrooms are also very average.
Tell me what things your dream kitchen and bathroom would include. I am looking to make these areas the focus of the home and I want to keep them functional and family friendly. I’m trying to get a feel for what 75% of the buyers in the market are looking for in a up to date home.
What kinds of cabinets do you like and in what color or stain? Would you like or dislike colored cabinets (such as white)? What would you think if you saw the cabinets were one color and the island another (ex. A darker cherry cabinet and a white island)? What kinds of special drawers or gadgets do you enjoy in a kitchen?
In the bathroom I am going to make sure there is a bathtub in the joint bathroom for any children but in the master suite would you be upset if there was only a shower but a nice one? Say it was all glass or tile with maybe a rain showerhead. Could you live without a bathtub? Do you think 2 sinks in a master bath is a must or could you live with just one (I know I couldn’t)?
(Also, if you felt like including things you wish your laundry room had I wouldn’t turn that advice away either 🙂

My absolute dream master bathroom has a LARGE shower with a seat inside and multiple shower hears. Large enough for two people and so no one has to be cold 😉
I would be ok without a bath but i’m not really into baths anyones. However I wouldn’t say no to a large tub with jets. I think two sinks are a must and I would love a large vanity/dressing area with a seat and mirror. Also good lighting. Nothing from above. Only lighting from the mirror, (wall). Large windows are a plus.

Alright here we go, I might not answer all your questions but I will try to hit most. I like simple cabinets with maybe like 4 with see through (semi frosted) glass fronts. However I like darker stains on the wood. I am not sure about the different color island but somehow that would be a little odd in my mind. I do like granite so if that is in your budget go for it. I also like this more than knobs for hardware.
In the master bathroom I would really prefer two see two sinks, it just makes it a lot easier. And i think the rainhead shower would be amazing if the walls are nice and pretty. This might sound weird but I also notice that I like it when the bathrooms and the kitchen have the same countertop and cabinet color.
Also for the laundryroom 😀 I wish there was more strorage so if there is anyway to incorperate that. That would be awesome.
Again these are my opinions.

I am an avid cook, so my dream kitchen has function-specific countertops instead of all one kind of surface. I want a 3′ length of butcher block for chopping, a 3′ length of granite for pastry rolling, and solid surface everywhere else.

My dream kitchen would have cherry cabinets-and lots of them!! It would have a big pantry, and an island. Granite is nice but there are sooo many great options out there now other than granite. A window over the sink, if possible, is always good too. Stainless appliances too.
My dream bath would have 2 sinks, a huge tub and if room a separate stand up shower. Also, a linen closet would be wonderful.
So basically I want the exact opposite kitchen and bath that I have now. hah!

I would DIE for a rain showerhead. Love them. If I had one of those I’d never need a tub; I’d just stand under it all day long. 😀
Agree with others on two sinks. I also think that if possible, it’s awesome when the toilet is separated from the rest of the bathroom, so that someone can take a shower and someone else can use the toilet. (Also, that way it doesn’t stink up the whole bathroom; just the little room where the toilet is!)

@Meowkers: I like to hear that a bath can be done without. I would also not say no to a tub but I’m worried about square footage and making it the most attractive with the amount of space. How do you feel about all glass showers? Would you prefer at least half being tiled or do you like bearing it all to the bathroom? Lighting is a great thing to think about as well. Incorporating the lights on the mirror is another thing.
@miksje130: I too like some glass in the kitchen cabinets. I think that is really elegant. How dark do you like your cabinets? If your getting to a chocolate brown do you think that is too much? This is what I mean by multiple colors of cabinets.

@FreeRangeMom: I am most certainly there with you on the multiple sections. That may be a little to personal for our remodel since it is basically completely for resale but I will have to remember that when we build out forever home.
@Bostongrl25: I love love love cherry as well. So gorgeous! What kinds of other countertops do you know of? I don’t think granite is going to be an option but I think fermika (sp?) is just kind of ugly…
@mightywombat: I am thinking im most definitely going to have to work this rain shower head in 😉

@mightywombat: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, seperate bathroom would be AWESOME!
And yes, like Bostongrl25 mentioned, stainless steel appliances would be great too.

Kitchen: Dark cherry stain, contemporary cabinets, granite, pantry, gas stove/oven, build-in microwave, island/peninsula for eating.
Master Bathroom: Large tiled shower, separate soaker tub (both Darling Husband and I do love our baths), linen closet/storage, given the choice, would rather have extra counter space instead of double sink, but both would be nice.
Also on “perfect house” wishlist: 2nd floor laundry with storage and laundry tub, gas fireplace, attached 2 1/2 car garage, finished basement, dark hardwood floors, walk-in closet in master bedroom.
Here’s a picture of my kitchen for inspiration. If I had designed it based solely on resale, I would probably have done more neutral paint and tile.

@CanAmBride: You have a beautiful kitchen! You can always change the paint later and I personally like that tile.

I think you have most of the basics covered, but I have to add heated floors for a bathroom. They are such a nice addition! The added cost depends on the area of the floor, but shouldn’t be more than $1000. FWIW, I think two sinks in a master bath are a MUST, and both the shower and bath are desirable. If you can, its great to have a “water closet” for the toilet, so two people can be in the bathroom at once but still have some privacy.

I like the newer trend of the cabinets and the island being two different types of wood. I’m more into french country style kitchens, so I’d want white cabinets (some with glass doors) and a cherry island. I don’t think granite is an absolute must. I would want an undermount sink so I could just wipe crumbs into the sink. Also, I love really decorative hoods over the oven instead of a microwave.
Bathroom, two sinks are an absolute must and if we’re dreaming here I want a shower that doubles as a sauna. I also looove claw foot tubs.

My dream kitchen would be very open and tuscan-inspired, like these:
And my dream bathroom would have lots of natural light, a standing shower, and a big giant tub. Also, a cool sink and a vanity space for doing hair and make-up. And I’d like the toilet to be semi-seperated so that it is not the first thing you see when you come in to the bathroom (either have a seperate door or a partition). And neutral, soothing tones, because I love to relax in the tub. I love these:
ETA: As for laundry, I think in addition to room for a full size washer and dryer, a large wash sink and lots of storage (like cabinets, whether built-in or free-standing, so everything is hidden) are a must. I also really like large drop leaf tables on wheels. I know someone who has one and it is SO nice to be able to have a large table to fold laundry and takes up very little space when you are not using it leaving the room more open.

My dream bathroom would include (as Grey said it so perfectly… and possibly other above as I pathetically did not read prior posts) “a tub that covers my boobs and my knees at the same time”. That’s it! Everything else would just be icing on the cake. Now, as for kitchens? That is a whole nother giant list of things.
