I have a very curious and confidant cat that is always trying to escape my townhome and run outside. I don’t want him to be an indoor/outdoor cat, since I don’t have a yard and I don’t want him to get hurt or lost. I looked into leash walking, and decided to buy him a cat harness and leash online. I tried it out today, and he really liked it! He right away started walking and exploring the neighborhood. However, I did notice I was getting some strange looks from people driving by in their cars. Plus, I was also concerned what would happen if someone with their dog walked by. So my question is, if you saw someone walking their cat in your neighborhood, what would your reaction be? Also, for those of you who do walk your cat, do you have any tips for me?

My Fiance worked at a local park a few years ago and saw a gentleman walking his white cat there. If you can get your cat to walk on a leash I say more power to you! I have a cat that loves to go outside, but we have to put him on a tie-out and just watch him. He would never go for a walk since all he seems to want to do is roll around in the grass.

I see this all the time around NYC, and I know people who do it. I think it’s a great option for a Cat who wants to go out an explore. I mostly have seen people walking their cats very early in the morning, trying to avoid dogs and people giving them weird looks or asking questions. Maybe try that? Or if you see a dog approaching go a different way or pick up your cat until they pass. I think you should save someone take a picture of you walking him. 🙂

My cat loves exploring outside but won’t wear a harness/use a leash.
He’s only done it once in the yard in the dark (here’s Darling Husband with him):
He loves exploring our netted in balcony now though.
I’d think it was pretty cool and I’d wish my cat would let me walk him.
There are a few people here who walk their cats along the canal.

Honestly I’d laugh my ass off.

I never walked but my cat did go out in the yard of our townhouse growing up. We had the harness with two leashes so he had a good area to walk around when we would tie him to the patio set. Atleast your not walking your cat in a stroller which is a little odd.

I live in the city, so I’ve seen a lot of people walking their cats. It’s always sorta silly, but whatever works!

Our strata has a leash law for all pets so it’s not new to me. If a dog comes you just pick your cat up in your arms.

We just bought a harness and leash for our cat, but haven’t used it yet. I would totes think you were cool and then ask if we could walk our cats together. 😀

I think it would be funny & cute all at the same time! But I also think its a GREAT option for cats who are indoor cats only & who wants to go outside. Walk your cat, he seemed to enjoy it! Don’t worry what anyone else thinks! I would walk my cats if they liked it but they are terrified of the outdoors!

My Fiance puts the harness on the cat and lets him walk around outside. It’s not really walking in the “dog” sense.. but decent enough for us now. We also put a leash on him to go to the vet. He likes looking around but I can hold him with having the security that if he jumps I am still attached to him. He also get nervous in a crate/soft carrier.
I would also be the crazy lady with my cat carriage.. whatevs.

I have a neighbor who walks her cat, and I have to smother a laugh whenever she walks by…but she’s super crazy and mean anyway. Generally I might do a double-take and think it was cute.

@julies1949: We have leash laws where I live but no one respects it. Cats are never tied and run all over town and my dog has been attacked by dogs who where off leash right in town.
