What you do when you need to self care?

I go to church, find my pastor and ask for prayers.  *I said a prayer for your test results 🙂

I’m sending prayers for good results on medical tests. Self care is my middle name…indulge in some fancy soaps (Kiehls or origins are my favorites) and take a hot bath while listening to smooth jazz or spa music. YouTube deep tissue yoga stretches. Make a cup of tea or a pour a glass of wine! I also really enjoy a fancy cup of coffee from a restaurant and surfing the net. Basically focus on being kind to yourself and feeding your wants and needs…life is too short!

I had a tough day today. The cure is a hot bubble bath with Clarons bath tonic (seriously the most relaxing bubble bath ever) with a candle lit and and the lights out. It’s so relaxing.

I incorporate self care into my life every day, but when I feel down or anxious, these are the things that help me.

If I am home:

  • tea (I practice being mindful while I prepare and drink it)
  • unplug! Text my immediate family “I’m busy today, talk later”, then turn off my phone
  • play with my cats, groom them, talk to them, bond with them, appreciate them, take a nap with them
  • journalling
  • listen to specific play lists (made when I’m having better days, so I have them when needed)
  • bubble bath + shave my legs + wash my hair
  • watch favourite movies, old cartoons or 80’s fantasy movies
  • read a random note from my Fiance (we have a box where we deposit notes for each other)
  • read a favourite book from childhood
  • meditation recordings on Youtube
  • look at pictures of kittens

 

If I go out:

  • browse a bookstore, just being around so many books is pleasant
  • get a pedicure or a haircut, sometimes both
  • get a facial
  • treat myself to a nice lunch
  • go to the theater for a matinee
  • go for a walk, try to be in a nature, like a park or water area
  • spend time with a friend, go out somewhere, you don’t need to go shopping but if you’re in a mall you can just walk around talking and browsing then grab a coffee, or go for a walk together
  • go to church and pray

Pizza, Cupcakes, popcorn. Not all at once but choose 1 or 2. 

Turn the phone off, and no computer or internet. 

Have a shower and put on a comfy robe. 

LIsten to music on headphones or not, and read a good book

Watch a movie you have wanted to see, or an old favorite on DVD

Any workable combinations of the above.

partypizza :  I am very high-functioning and can deal with a lot of stress. BUT when I stop dealing well, I completely become a shell of who I am. Darling Husband has told me that it’s like the lights are on but no one is home. It’s scary. The only thing that gets me out of these funks is taking time off work (1-3 days) and accomplishing light tasks like house work, making art and exercise. Diet, diet, diet! Eating a very healthy diet with zero processed foods bring me a lot of clarity. The best thing you can do is recognize that in life we go through cycles. Even though the funk you are experiencing feels like it will last an eternity, it will eventually end if you take the time to self-care. But be careful with the internet’s definition of self-care! Self-care is not wine and chocolate. It is doing good things for your health not things that simply feel good.

I love to get my backpack, my dog, and go on a nature adventure.  To have peace and quiet, and be in nature, hiking with my dog, is everything.
