@lovelynan: Probiotics made things move a little too much for me. It was almost too aggressive on my stomach, so fruits and applesauce seem to do the trick naturally.

increased iron in prenatals will stop you up.   metamucil just makes you gassy.  eat some prunes instead.

You can take Colace too! I had the opposite problem during pregnancy, but Colace was a godsend right after delivery. Oh man. That first poop is TERRIFYING.

STOP taking Metmucil! GIve yourself an enema and hold it for as long as you can! I’m a RN in an in-patient surgical unit specializing in bowels ๐Ÿ™‚

Too funny! But so true…Metamucil sucks and that’s the only thing my doctor has talked about. I’m 35 weeks now, I don’t have room for anything down there other than a 6 pound baby!

@Eva Peron:  I don’t know if those herbal teas are okay during pregnancy.

@panterapeach:  My OB told me to stop taking fiber tablets (they can actually stop things up), eat prunes and take Miralax. I haven’t started the Miralax, but since I’ve stopped the fiber and increased the prunes, I’ve had one realy good Bridesmaid or Best Man a few days ago but I think I’m going to have to start Miralax this weekend.

As for constipation pushing as prep for labor– I read in a book that the techniques you use like how you position yourself on the toilet, or where your legs are, etc are a good indication of what position you’ll be most comfortable in to deliver. Isn’t that a plesant thought? LOL

Good Luck getting things moving. everyone!

Haaaa….”a couple pebbles at a time.”  Oh JHo, I feel your pain.  I’ve been practically overdosing on high fiber oatmeal everyday with little relief other than gas.  My next doctor appointment is May 21st, so if things don’t ease up by then, I’m going to ask what I can do.  Good to hear some effective pooping strategies, though!  ๐Ÿ™‚

Lots of water, movement, and if needed, benefiber, do the trick for me.  I have painful IBS-A so fiber and bowel movements are like one of the top 3 three things on my mind at any given time.

Glycerin suppositories are not a laxative. They melt in the rectum and lubricate the stool that is already there so it is easier to pass.

I also love Benefiber. If I start to get stopped up I just start putting a little bit on everything I eat during the course of a day – usually works great!
