We did some work on our kitchen in the past few years and here and some of the things that I love and some that I wish I had done differently:  base cabinets should be large drawers primarily…so much easier to store pots and pans in them and they are more space efficient;  quartz counters in something other than black or white; Blanco Silgranit extra deep single-bowl sink…it never scratches up like stainless steel does and a large single bowl sink makes it easy to clean large pots and pans; outlet strips close to your cabinets so your backsplash isn ‘t cluttered with outlets.  Some other things I love about our house: medium colored hardwoods …they don’t show dirt or dust like dark or light ones do; walk in closets and bathrooms for each of us; open floor plan that doesn’t waste space with hallways; tray/high ceilings; a utility sink in the laundry and/or garage; extra large garage so there is room for bikes, yard tools, etc.

prettyinpink11:  I totally dig the flamingo wall paper too. The bonus to having a pink bathroom is that my husband wouldn’t use it. The way to deter my daughter would be making her have to clean something to access it.

My dream home would have the following:

  • Large back yard (half an acre to 2 acres or so)
  • swimming pool
  • Historic home -1920’s or earlier
  • Wide plank dark wood floors
  • claw foot bathtub
  • master bathroom
  • walk in closet
  • 4 bedrooms
  • finished basement with bar, game room, and gym
  • sun room/library
  • be in my hometown on long island

Now..if only i’d win that lottery already.

A dressing room/giant walk-in closet room (like in old movies).  *Sigh.

My dream house would have…

– a huge bathtub in the master bathroom with a separate shower

– a huge walk in closet with tons of storage

– a room (wouldn’t have to be huge) to be a library/reading room

– a laundry chute

– two stories

– a pretty deck and a pretty porch

– an attractive storage shed to stash stuff

– a guest room

– at least one window seat

– tons of storage/pantry in the kitchen

hmm. I’m sure there is so much more but living in a small 1 bedroom apartment without many luxuries keeps my wish list pretty reasonable 🙂

We are currently saving for our first home. We want an older home with character, that is really important to us. We do not want to live in a new development or a townhouse- it MUST be detached. We can’t wait to start house hunting!

Our wishlist- A large updated kitchen (or at least one we could fix up without completely gutting) with an island or breakfast bar area, gas stove, hardwood floors, 3-4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, finished basement (FI wants a home theater in the basement), decent sized yard with a nice back porch area, lots of storage space. Preferably 2 stories. I’d love a master suite but that’s not common in older homes so I’m not expecting it, although maybe we could add one on later. Also, I LOVE french doors and would love to have a little reading room or sun porch.

Interior-

5 bedrooms, 5 baths.

Master bedroom with a large bay window with seat. My Boyfriend or Best Friend would say he needs a big TV. So one that could be hidden. Big bathroom with a stand up shower with two shower heads and a tub. Double vanity with big mirrors and with bright lights on a seperate switch with a dimming switch for overhead lights. Radiant heat lighting near shower and heated tile floors. Walk through bathroom in to a master closet with lots of shelving and clothing rods. I would like this to be on the main floor.

Guest bedroom on the main floor as well. Large enough to have a king size bed and an attached bathroom.

Large kitchen with an island that is big enough for 3/4 barstools. Professional grade Viking appliances  including a flat top. Quartz countertops in a medium shade with white cabinets and dark flooring. Yellow walls. I’ve always wanted a yellow kitchen. An area for an informal dining room with a table that is large enough for just our family to sit at and maybe a guest or two.

Quarter bath on the main floor off of the living room and a large formal dining room.

Upstairs would be 3 bedrooms and a bathroom. All of the bedrooms with a small walk in closet and a laundry chute in that bathroom. Basically a kids only area that they are allowed to decorate their own way.

Finished basement with a projection TV and a man area with a small bar. A playroom area for the littles. I would like it to be a very cozy area where we could spend a lot of time and be comfortable as a family. Quarter bath downstairs so no one has to run up and down the steps a million times a day.

Overall I would like an open kitchen but not as much in the rest of the home. Lots of windows, diming lights everywhere, a lot of fans, hardwood floors on main level in kitchen and dining rooms, carpet in bedrooms, living room, basement, tile in bathrooms.

Exterior- Big porch with lots of room for swings and a big yard to watch littles play. Large garage 4/5 stalls. My Boyfriend or Best Friend requires a lot of space for his toys and I will not park outside here. It gets cold and very snowy. We want a house to grow old in and watch our grandchildren play in the yard with our old dog. We would love to build something that has all of these features but still looks like an old home.

The best part is that I’ve priced a home with these features and even if it’s 4000sq ft and its built from ground up it can be done for about 500K on 3 acres of land.
