I know these posts pop up all the time but today I cleared out my bag and it never ceases to amaze me all the rubbish I store in there!
So I am on a mission to carry only the essentials & it got me thinking- what do you always carry in your bag?

@justjade: I hate lugging around everything and the kitchen sink, so I refuse to buy a large bag. I just get small-ish hobos. All I carry is my wallet, phone, a few store savings cards, an extra set of keys and maybe a bandaid and a pantyliner. I have a hairbrush, chapstick and an umbrella in my car and in my desk at work.

@justjade: purse, phone, phone charger cord, comb, hair ties and clips, lipstick, mirror, lip gloss, reading glasses (I’m old), sunglasses, keys, bus/train/tram ticket, couple of tampons, tissues, pen and small notepad (I told you I was old), tic tacs, snack bar, nail file (no idea why, I can’t remember the last time I had to file a nail when I was out). Sometimes I squeeze a water bottle in too.

Generally I don’t carry a “purse” unless it’s that time of the month and it’s not coat weather, then there’s the obvious tampon and panty liners in a cute small velvet drawstring bag… which all my friends joke is my period bag because they’ve known me long enough to know I only carry it a few days a month in warm weather lol.
If I’m forced to dress up in the summer I will also use that bag to hold my credit card, ID, and money in a money clip, cell phone, and sometimes even pocket knife, nail clippers, and Chapstick… and sunglasses hanging from tight part of looped around tied drawstring when not in use (so they don’t bang around/get damaged).
Which is pretty much what I keep in my jeans only I use a wallet with more stuff in it than the money clip, front pockets for nail clippers, knife, and Chapstick, cell phone in a holster with sunglasses hanging from the side when not in use. And when dressed up in cooler weather the stuff goes in the coat pockets cause my winter coats have serious pockets.
So basically I suck at purses, I never really understood having to carry something around, but I also never understood most womens jeans that have pockets for half of hands either (and they were usually about 6″ too short on me in the legs) so I buy mens … where I can put stuff AND my hands in the pockets… and they are long enough! But as a disclaimer I have long limbs so the mens jeans tend to fit me better and the real usable pockets started out as a side benifit but I can’t imagine not having them! I’ve had friends who were like “I tried mens jeans they fit horrible!”… and in their favor if we sat outside the building at work up against the building (which happened regularly on our breaks), their legs would be inches shorter than mine but their shoulders would rest several inches above mine even though we were the same height… so body shape matters!
Most of all, most women I know have serious PURSES. They have all manner of things in them and it never ceases to amaze me what they pull out of them!

@jadlnc: My birthday is next week and my present to myself is a new purse. I’m thinking to get the smallest one practical to carry only what i need- which is pretty much what you listed!

@justjade: Good luck! I’ve been trying to buy a new bag for 2 years and I just can’t find one I love like my current bag. She’s been such a good girl, held up for 6 years now! Fiance offered a new bag as my b-day present this year and last year and both times I gave up looking. I did come close with one Dooney and Burke…if only the strap was longer. Oh well, maybe next year! 🙂

Main area: wallet, checkbook (not that I need it in there, but otherwise I’d lose it), pen, haircomb, tide-to-go pen, xanax, and sunglasses in their case
Inside open pocket: chapstick, nail file, bandaid, cleareyes
Inside zip pocket: tampon and pad
Plus, there’s usually some random crap floating around, but those are the staples.
