What's something to splurge on?

Depends what you like. Personally I rarely use bags, so in a similar situation I splurged on made-to-measure knee-high boots. I can never find ones to fit my skinny calves. I wear them all the time.

Handbag

Jewelry

Spa Day

An espresso machine (I think they’re around $500)

Shoes

A leather or non leather coat or nice clothing item that you’ve been eyeing. I’d go mostly classic here versus a trendy splurge.

I’m going to give you some slightly different advice: what if you set aside that money for when something came up that you really want? Right now, a splurge will feel like a treat, but if it isn’t something that you really want, will you get maximum use and enjoyment from it?

I would do a weekend get away at a spa.

I like to commemorate special occasions with jewelry or handbags. Sometimes shoes. It depends on your style. You could get some high quality pearls for that amount if you would wear them. A nice RHR, or if you wanted to go slightly higher, diamond stud earrings. Brands like Coach, Dooney, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff, Longchamp, Ted Baker, Tory Burch and occasionally others have bags available in that price range. Everyone has different associations with different brands, but all of those are more or less similar. You could possibly go with a pre-owned bag from a designer house, as well (some people are willing to buy pre-owned, while others are not).

And while I wouldn’t spend the money on just a weekend away, I would spend it on an experience I wanted to have – skydiving, flight lessons, bungee jumping, ziplining, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, driving a fabulous racecar, getting to personally interact with your favorite animal at the zoo, etc. A spa or nice hotel can happen anytime you need time away, but to commemorate something bigger, I’d go with something more memorable.

I love Henri Bendel handbags! So unique and such great quality. I would snag one while you can since I think they’re actually closing. Also check out Nordstrom they have a nice selection of bags and you can filter by price range. Congrats on the new job!

Either a nice structured handbag if that would suit your new office environment. Mansur Gavriel makes gorgeous classic totes in pretty colors, $450-650 range depending on size and style.  They look like a designer bag but at half the price. And more timeless/ less “everywhere” than Kors, Kate Spade, Coach, etc.

Or a classic piece of jewelry like a pair of Ippolita earrings:

Or a David Yurman bracelet:

I don’t think I could spend 500 on one item. With that money to spare I would go on holiday laughing

Honestly I’d just save the money. But if I HAD to spend it, I’d buy a package of Pure Barre classes.

secondtimer18 :  Ooh, I second made to order! I once bought gorgeous boots that were rather large at the ankle, so on a trip to NYC I found a place that did shoe alterations. And man, did that make a difference. Never received as many compliments as I did on those boots. 🙂

Do you have high quality basics?  A nice coat, pumps, work-appropriate day-to-evening dresses, leather handbag, etc?  Do you need a haircut?

If your pay has doubled, I’d make sure that I had a few great outfits to start at the new job.  $500 can go a long way at TJ Maxx/ Marshalls, a beauty school for a cut/color, and sterling silver/ good looking costume jewelry at Nordstrom Rack.

It’s so funny you posted this because I just struggled with this last week. I had a client give me a huge Saks gift card and I was trying to decide between a Cartier watch or Valentino bag (saks doesn’t carry my 2 preferred handbag brands or it wouldn’t have even been a question). Every one of my friends said to get the watch but I went with the bag. Although the watch was classic and beautiful and wouldn’t “wear out” the way the bag would, I just knew I’d use and enjoy the bag way more, so just what would give you more enjoyment. It’s a splurge so it doesn’t have to be practical or last forever

TUMI stylish laptop bag or wallets! Great for your new job 😉

Henry Bendl and Kate Spade, love their wallets.   also, what about a nice watch to wear to work? Or an IPad?
