This is going to sound silly, but actually the PS3 is one of the highest quality rated blu-ray players out there!

My Fiance says the PS3 has the best blu ray player on the market.  Something may have come out since then that is better, but this was last year when I was purchasing one for my dad for Christmas.  If you don’t want to pay for the PS3 (which I didn’t for my dad), I went with a model that had an internal wireless card so it can automatically update without having to be plugged into an ethernet port.  It’s important that the unit have internet access so it can constantly update it’s software/firmware, otherwise it’ll stop being able to read the disks. I’ve seen this happen with people’s units that weren’t connected and able to update themselves.

@mcnetn3: Ha. Mr. D says the same thing – I think it’s really a bid to get a PS3 – but we have it and I love the blu-ray and he loves the gaming. So… I suppose it was a good purchase!

I also use it to watch instant netflix.  But my Fiance has to ask before renting a game for the PS3 since it’s in the living room and I hate it when he plays games in the living room!

This is the one I got my dad, and he hasn’t had any problems with it, but there are definitely newer LG Network Blu Ray players on the market that have the wi-fi, I’d just do a bunch of research and definitely make sure it has the wi-fi.  If you have netflix and like to watch them streaming, you have to have the internet connection, but only some companies have the netflix option, so look for that too.

PS 3 is great and all, and I think it is the best value in terms of having both the gaming system and the blu-ray player but not the best actual player, there are many better ones on the market. $300 is actually a pretty high budget for blu ray players these days and you should be able to get something really good. I personally love LG’s Blu ray players as the quality is brilliant and you are getting very good bang for your buck. Amazon has the LG BD570 on sale right now for Black Friday for $150 down from $220. Good luck.

@MacFaniam24:I just got a Samsung and it does the job!  I used it once to watch Glee…we got a second BluRay player because we only have the PS3 in the living room and the Fiance did NOT want to watch Glee.  So now I can watch whatever chick flicks/shows I want in the bedroom!

Best Buy has some great prices for Christmas.

Also, here’s a link to what CNET rates the best blu-ray plateyers:

We also have the PS3 and we use it actually 80% for everything else but gaming.

If it was 2 years back I would urge you to get the PS3 strictly for bang for the buck.

But I’ve noticed that BluRays are getting A LOT cheaper. I’ve seen lots of really awesome Black Friday deals and even ones going on now. There’s been a surge on online week of Boyfriend or Best Friend deals this year. Check out http://www.blackfriday.info I’ve seen MANY players for under $150.

No help on style or model though.

But Sony is always a fave of mine. 🙂

Do you guys have a TV that is HDMI compatiable?
