I always bring something for the baby and maybe some lotions or a spa set for the mother. Another idea if you know her very well is maybe a non maternity outfit that she can wear in a few weeks after getting out of the hospital.

If she doesn’t already have one, a pretty robe is a nice option.  Hospital gowns are not cute and you don’t want to be receiving visitors at the hospital and in the days at home recovering wearing ratty sweats!

A hamper with a few different type of tea (put in some decaf too) and a couple of nice mugs are a good gift. She is going to be surviving on little sleep for a while, so a nice cup of tea at 3am would be nice.

My mum’s partner just had a baby 3 weeks ago, and they said what they appriciated the most was people bringing food once they were home from hospital. So making or buying a lasagna or something to put in their fridge once they get home will always be appriciated.

I love the ideas everyone’s already said.  I also think maybe some really comfy pj’s would work.  If she’s going to be up with a baby at night, she should at least be comfortable.  And, I can garantee when I have a baby, I’ll be living in my pajamas while on maternity leave, just like friends of mine did!  So they’d get some use.

I always hear that bringing a casserole/food they can eat is the BEST thing you can give them.

I think some fancy teas would be AWESOME, Roux! Anything calming/relaxing like that sounds like a really nice gift to me!!!

A gift certificate to a spa and a voucher for free baby sitting while she goes and relaxes and the spa in a few weeks!!

depending on what she already brought…PJs, slippers, fresh snacks,(but that have some shelf life), mini massager…apparently you are super hungry after delivery!

Coming from very recent personal experience: a really nice pair of bedsocks and a short nightgown made for breastfeeding (if she’s doing that).  NO PANTS BOTTOMS PJs!

If you are going up to the hospital- food. But I literally has 5 lasagnas in my fridge when I got home…

I 2nd the babysitting offer if you are okay with it. I would also just ask, what she needs, or even what she was surprised about, having a baby. That will give you clues about her needs at this time. Example-one girl bought me liquor but I was nursing- not a useful gift. I also would not bring anything for immediate use for the baby that needs to be washed. I was so overwhelmed those things never got used!

Food!  And gift cards for restaurants.  I don’t have kids yet but most of my friends who gave birth and I visited said they were happy they did not have to cook and take care of a baby.  They were glad to have restaurant gift cards too coz they were able to have 1 night out w/ their hubby while the baby was with grandma.  Gift card to Target or places where mommy can buy stuff for herself & the baby would be a great gift, too.
