I don’t get it – everyone says they love it but they are mainly loving the cream cheese filling – which you can get at most italian bakeries!

We are having vanilla cake with cream cheese filling!?!?!?!

I am an east coast girl who also never understood the whole red velvet thing.  I’d even eaten it and thought, meh.  I think you can only truly understand red velvet if you make one yourself.  Maybe it is just me, but I have a hard time enjoying food when I don’t know what is in it and I always had a hard time identifying the flavors in red velvet cake.  Also, I think that if a bakery uses a ton of cheap red food dye, it can give it a very strange artificial flavor. My husband always liked it so I made one for his birthday this year.  I used the recipe from the Pioneer Woman cookbook (it may be on her website too) and it totally changed my view.  It is a great recipe and obviously it was very fresh and the cream cheese frosting really makes it.  It helps that it is gorgeous!  I don’t know the history of the cake but I do think it is delish when done right.

It’s a southern thing definitely haha, but you really need to make sure it’s made properly. I have had good red velvet cake that is absolute heaven, and I have had not-so-good red velvet cake where the cream cheese frosting was far too sweet, the cake was too dry and crumbly, or you couldn’t taste the cocoa flavor at all. I love a good red velvet cake though, and it’s definitely a must for any wedding with southern ties! 🙂

I hate to rain on your parade, but red velvet cake is probably the most unhealthy cake you could order.  Our baker told us that she refuses to make it because there is so much red food coloring per serving (like 2 teaspoons!) to get it the right color.  The red food coloring is made from COAL TAR and is a known carcinogin!

I don’t know what the deal is, but I know that I love it!  It’s one of the flavors we tasted, but we ended up going with chocolate.

I feel like the only person that dislikes Red Velvet cake. I lvoe the frosting but the cake has a funny flavor.

I’ve never been a fan of red velvet cake – if you love the cream cheese frosting, put it with a yummy cake flavor and it would be even better! Smile

I don’t know why its traditional but Red Velvet is a MUST at my wedding 🙂 DELICIOUS!

@futuremominlaw – I have my Grandma’s recipe and there is absolutely no need to add red food coloring to it. You can use beetroot to creat the color. It’s the most wonderful thing ever! It’s kind of strange that your bakery wouldn’t offer an alternative like that.

Red velvet is just chocolate cake. It’s just red! It’s the exact same thing!! The only difference is that red velvet cake usually comes with cream cheese frosting.

A true red velvet cake doesn’t have red dye in it. My Grandma makes it red with beet juice, something that they did during the WWII according to her.

I hate red velvet cake.  It always tastes like nothing to me.  It tastes like red food dye if it does have any flavors.  I don’t get it either!

Red velvet has cocoa in it?? I always thought it way just yellow cake colored with beet juice! I’m from nowhere near the south though, so please excuse my ignorance of what is apparently the south’s favorite cake!
