So between moving into our new home and a few weddings, we’ve had to push back any babymoon plans. I’m currently at 21 weeks and the earliest we’d be able to get away would be 24/25 weeks. That being said, more than ever, we both need some quiet time alone away from the madness of all the (wonderful but hectic) recent changes in our lives so we still definitely want to do a long weekend trip somewhere.
We’re probbably going somewhere with a quiet beach that’s a short drive away (cape may, nj) or a very short flight away (florida keys) within the U.S. I’m more concerned about comfort and being able to enjoy myself before I get too big and uncomfortable. I’ve had no issues so far with symptoms and I’m low-risk.
To mamas who’ve been there and done that, what’s the farthest in your pregnancy that you went on a babymoon and would you have done it earlier/later/differently?

I don’t have kids, but work in ob. Usually we recommend to avoid flying or excessive long trips by 28 weeks. So anytime before that is the best.

Depending on the location and type of vacation I would take it at any time during pregnancy. We were at 20 weeks or so when we went away for a short trip. However, we’ve travelled since then also and at least in my case I haven’t had any problems traveling. Babymooning should be about relaxation anyways so if that’s the plan you can really enjoy it as late as 37 weeks I would think!

We’re going away and i’ll be 36 weeks…cutting it close but its only a 2 hour plane ride away within the same country 🙂

I’m 31 weeks now and just in the last week have started to become uncomfortable to the point where I wouldn’t enjoy a trip to do anything other than lay on the couch (or the beach). So I’d say no later than 29-30 weeks for a plane trip or a trip anywhere fancy.
When I was 26.5 weeks we went to Arizona on our babymoon, which was a 4-hour flight. I had no problems with that trip, but I would recommend getting an aisle seat on a plane so you can get up and walk around and stretch your legs. I did have some swelling on days we flew, so I drank lots of extra water.
I’ll be 33.5 weeks for the 4th of July when Darling Husband and I are going on a 4 hour road trip, but we are going to his family’s cabin in vermont where I will just be lounging in sweatpants all weekend, and I’m looking forward to that. I know I’m going to have to stop probably twice on each drive to pee/stretch, but I’m sure it will still be relaxing!

rittenhousenewbee: I’m 22 weeks today and I leave next Wednesday for a week in Florida. 🙂 I’m not concerned about being too big. I did have to get realistic last week though, I cannot function at 100% of my pre-pregnancy level any longer. I had to drop my expectations of what I can do, how much I can do, and I have to build in rest periods. So I’ve tried to adjust my expectations for the trip as well!
Our trip isn’t a babymoon. Its for a family wedding. It will not be full of relaxation! But I am so looking forward to it!
We are trying to plan a weekend away. At this point it will likely be September! It will be fairly local (2 hour drive) and I’ll be closer to 34 weeks.

I went on a Jamaica trip at 16 weeks and then did a weekend in Mystic CT at like 32 weeks (just by car). I’d feel comfortable doing a car trip until like 35-36 weeks as long as everything was progressing normally.

We flew 6 hours to/from Hawaii when I was 28/29 weeks. It was fine. I’d have been comfortable doing a short trip like you described up to about 36 weeks. I had my son at 39 weeks.

I flew from Chicago to Florida for a long weekend at 32 weeks (the airlines cutoff) and it was great! We seriously needed the getaway and it was the perfect little babymoon. Just be sure to ask your OBGYN office for a copy of your medical history to bring with you just in case something were to happen.

We went on a babymoon when I was about 32 weeks. It was a 4-5 hour car ride away. It would have been nice to go a little earlier.

I’m nearly 26 weeks now and feeling the best I have my whole pregnancy so far! I finally got my second trimester energy! I hope you have a great time! I’ve flown for a few weekend trips 3 weeks in a row from week 22-24 and did fine.

You’d be fine at 24/25 weeks. We did Savannah last Labor Day, which was perfect. I never got a maternity suit- just bought a top one size up at Target, and was able to fit into a pair of boy-short style bottoms I already had.

I did my first babymoon at around 24 weeks. Babymoon number 2 was at 30 weeks, and then I went on a work trip at 34 weeks. As long as your pregnancy is progressing normally, you’re fine. As you get closer to your due date, you just want to stick close to home in case you go into labor–not that any hospital where you’re travrling couldn’t take care of you, but just for your own comfort (and some insurance companies will only cover a full-term birth at the hospital where you’re registered). But basically, it’s totally fine to travel. At 24/25 weeks you’ll be more than ok!
