- Wedding: September 2010 - Heron Hill Winery
The most I paid (the only time I had to buy one) was $260 and from what I hear it’s on the higher end for Bridesmaid or Best Man dress…and it’s not a dress I can really wear again, but my friend did buy a dress to be in my wedding and though my options were cheaper I didn’t care. It made her happy to have that dress so we all bought without complaint. If it were anything over $300 I would be upset….the cap for my dresses was $200.

i think my dress for my sil’s wedding was around $400. my bms’ dresses were about $300, but i paid for 1/2 for a few of the girls (i had asked them before choosing a dress for the most they would be comfortable spending, and then paid a portion for the girls who couldn’t afford the one my moh, sil/bm, and i chose). i thought that was over the top–and it was a designer dress (my bms wore amsale). so yeah, $700 is a LOT. i definitely think you can find something gorgeous for a more reasonable price.

@WineAndCupcakes: Oh dear, you weren’t kidding. The dresses are gorgeous and your Fiance has couture taste! It’s sweet that he’s contributing to the process, welcome to wedding planning!
You’ve gotten a lot of feedback here…I appreciated @Butterbee:

@WineAndCupcakes: I guess I just experienced the post cut-off problem…I liked the link to the wholesale site, or you could hire a seamstress, or even use the photo as an inspiration to find a similar style that is more affordable 🙂

Have you tried http://www.like.com to find something similar (and less expensive?)

I wouldn’t want to pay $700 for a dress, no matter how much money I make! it’s definitely too much.
it’s a pretty dress though.
I was super self-conscious about asking my friends to pay for their own dresses, so I told them they can wear a formal black dress of their choice, any store, as long as I pre-approve it. so even if they already have something in their closet that they love, or if it came from old navy, I’m ok with them wearing it as long as it looks nice!

Sorry ladies I haven’t been on the bee lately to respond, did not even realize there were this many responses!!!
@rosworms: you’re not being rude, at all! and I get that it’s ridiculous, that’s why part of the title is “is my Fiance crazy” hehe 😉
@Georgia Bee: lol if only. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be involved every step of the way 🙂 It’ll be good for the most part b/c I’m super indecisive, but this does not fall into that category.
@Krises: If you can’t afford to pay for their dresses either, I’m not sure how you can expect them to. That’s my argument to my FI!!!!
@Oneeleven: Grammy – lol 🙂 there have been a lot of suggestions for that, I’ll have to look into it! We still have over a year, so I’ve got lots of time to hunt!

My friends Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses were $250. Needless to say it was too expensive.

@TankGirl: can’t believe I didn’t add a thread! doh! thanks, I’ll get on that
@Neva: yes, he is 🙂 I think I’ll look into the seamstress option of having it duplicated. I wouldn’t ask my girls to spend over $200, and even that makes my stomach turn over. My Maid/Matron of Honor makes over 100k and I wouldn’t ask her to spend $700 on a dress, and I know she’d be able to wear it again as a guest to weddings, as her and her Darling Husband go to a few a year. It’s just INSANE! Oh, and I told him that if he really wanted our BMs in this dress, we would have to buy them, otherwise we need to look at other dresses.
@VegasBaby: NOPE! (and I told him this …. If I were a Bridesmaid or Best Man and the bride asked me to buy a $700 dress, I’d back out. Unless the bride and groom were buying the dress.)
@kryje003: I doubt that we’re from much different ‘tax brackets’ that’s why I made this post. I do not in any sense think that it’s reasonable. I will NOT ask my girls to buy this, the only way they’ll wear it is if I get a second job waiting tables and adding our tax refund money towards it!
@Entangled: I know! I just need to get him to see that.
@cazian: I thought about it, but then he would think I was ganging up on him LOL.
@vmec: laugh away.
@Beansy: lol my answers to ALL of the questions are no 😉
@spaniel: I know. I’ve talked to two of the four about budgets so far, what they’re willing to spend, etc.

@SerenaSF: great idea! I already check two of those sights on a fairly regular basis, thanks 🙂
@Butterbee: I wanted to keep it under $100, but $200 TOPS. I also wanted to buy them, considering the financial situations of some of them. I can’t afford $2800 to buy Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses. Not. Happening.
@helenberrycrunch: laid an egg? I want pics 😉
@indibee: yeah, I’ll have to check out the replica route, otherwise find something else. I’m so mad that I’m even having to deal with this with him! (Serves me right for leaving wedding mags laying around, yeah? hehe)
@MissHighHeel: Right?! My heart melted when I came home from work and he was flipping through magazines, until I googled the dress, saw the price, picked my jaw up off the floor, and he *still* wanted it!!
@Butterbee: thanks! it’s been bookmarked 😀
@7SEVENJ9: VS, really? Nice!
@pink.sequins: nope, I really wasn’t :/ wish I was!
@creativeplannertobee: I haven’t yet, but I will!

Friend or not, I think my answer to you would be to tell you where you and your Fiance could shove the dress. lol I didn’t pay that much for my wedding dress and I still cringed at paying what I did! There is no way -even if hell froze over- that I would pay $700 for a BRIDESMAID dress!
Good luck with getting him back to planet Earth! 😛

Why is Fiance so interested in Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses? Stick him on the groomsmen…just make sure he doesn’t ask them to buy custom, Italian made suits!
Must expensive Bridesmaid or Best Man dress I bought was $420 for a strapless top and column skirt. I was 22 and in my first wedding. I didn’t know to push back. I vener wore it and gave it to charity a few months ago.
Oddly, the girl who picked a full skirt (bride let us pick skirts) paid under $400 for her dress, which was 6 sizes larger than mine. Insanity.

I’m sorry, but your Fiance is coming across as seriously selfish for wanting your BMs to spend $700 on a dress. And that’s what I would tell him, that it would be very awful and selfish of you guys to ask your BMs to spend that much and that you refuse to do it.

It is good that you are looking into different options. There are so many duplicate and repetitive styles out there that you will definitely be able to find a similar style or have dresses made.

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: honestly he wasn’t until he was bored and started flipping through some random bridal magazine I had laying out. He saw a pic, and fell in love. We didn’t know how much it was at the time, and he just doesn’t know about these things like us girls do *insert loving eye roll*
@Wonderstruck: I’ve told him this. Well, I didn’t say selfish, more like crazy / insane / ridiculous etc lol.
@s_h_e_l_b_s: That’s what I’m hoping!
