@Jabberwocky:  dude be careful with the memes and jokes. In the last shit show of a thread that is moissanite vs diamond I made a similar joke about taking bets and I got moderated for baiting. now I hesitate to make any jokes or post any memes in these threads :/

@BlondeMissMolly:  I’ll keep that in mind. I figured it would be okay since it didn’t involve specific posters.

ETA: I also posted it under the assumption that someone would need a drink after reading my posts too, because semantics is one of those things I get really stuck on, and I’m sure someone’s rolling their eyes at me.

@Jabberwocky:  well I liked it but I had no idea my past joke could be misconstrued as baiting and now I’m gun shy.

Back to topic…. If I understand this correctly there is a story about a nice meateor falling to earth n some guy is like oh we can use this as a simulated diamond.  But the thing is the rings today are lab created n don’t come from that or any meteor, correct?

@gemgirl6:

“No gem quality silicon carbide/moissanite exists or has ever existed in nature.”

Such a strong statement. I like to avoid using words that are so definitive such as EVER or NEVER.  Unless of course one has scoured the whole of the universe in search of “gem quality moissanite” may they state such definitive “facts”.

My fiance is an aerospace engineer who works with silicon carbide (the material that moissanite is made of). It’s extremely durable–almost as hard as a diamond. In fact, diamonds are just about the only thing a moissanite can’t cut.

Now to the story behind it: Many Moissy owners here are posting the story on it as a space rock/made of stardust. Technically, that’s true–but technically YOU and most everything around you are made of stardust (everything carbon-based is–including diamonds), as PPs noted. Nova even did a documentary on that (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/space/star-in-you.html, and scientists discovered back in 1999 that the carbon in diamonds came from the depths of outer space http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1999/08/990806075540.htm).

Plus, as a consumer buying a gem-quality stone, you’re not getting a meteor fragment. You’re getting a lab-created stone. Not a bad thing–just a fact.

I’m not trying to get into a diamond vs. moissy debate. I’m just pointing out that the story is totally NOT a selling point. It’s an advertising technique. Everything made of carbon came from stardust. Not just moissanites. Anyone buying in to that stardust/meteorite story, is buying into the Moissy advertising message in the same way that diamond buyers buy into the “a diamond is forever” message.

Moissanite is actually the same lab-created material they use in LED lights, drill bits, bulletproof vests, electrical circuits/semiconductors, and high performance brakes on cars. Companies love it because it’s so strong, heat-resistant and cheap. Romantic, no?

@VictorianChick:  the moissante u see in jewelry is different ie szignificantly altered  from the natural silicon carbide.that was discovered.

moissanite is a man made created jewel altered to make it more diamon.d like for marketing as a sim.

People seem desparate to belisve what they have, a moissy, is better than cz and equivalent to a precious gemstone as evidsncec by the claims now that anything is possible so prove gem qualitg moissanite doesnt exist. lol ludicrous

of course anything is possible however in the interin all we have is whaf we know today. Moissanite is a man made created jewel. No more, no less.

@cbgg:  moissanite is not a gemstone, it is a created jewel.i What is put in jewelry does not exist in nature. moissanite is manufactured rom sythetic siljcon carbide that is altefed to make it larger, whiter for marketing as a diamond sim.

@als1214:  I think all she is trying to say is the moissanite we see in jewelry does not exist in nature.  When they found silicon carbide in the meteor and have found small amounts on earth, the crystal size is very small (microscopic to 2 mm I think?) and a blackened green colour.  Someone figured out doing some scientific voodoo in the lab could produce a larger, clearer crystal.  So, as far as we know, jewelry quality moissanite can only exist with scientific intervention (ie not in nature)
