I’m trying to get a better idea of what our timeline will be for the day of. Nothing specific (getting ready, makeup, etc), I just need to figure out the length of the ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception. What’s the norm? I feel like I should know this–I’ve been planning our wedding now for a couple months, but I’m stumped and I need help!
What’s your timeline looking like? How long is your ceremony? How long is your cocktail hour? And how long is your reception?
(Remember when you were a kid and someone asked the teacher a question, but prefaced the question with “I have a stupid question”? And the teacher would reply “there is no such thing as a ‘stupid question.'” I feel like that kid right now.)

Hi! I have found that MOST venues (of course there are always exceptions, options to add more time, etc.) allow for a 5-hour event rental, plus time to set up and clean up. If you are having the ceremony and reception at the same place, I think a typical timeline is:
30 minutes – ceremony
45-60 minutes – cocktails (length depends on whether you need a turnover of the ceremony space, whether you are taking pictures during cocktails, whether you have a yichud, etc.)
3 1/2 hours – reception (dinner and dancing)
If you are getting married somewhere offsite (church, etc.) than I think you would have your guests go straight into 1 hour for cocktails, and then a 4-hour reception.

2 pm – groom/smen arrive at the church
2:45 – bride/smaids arrive at the church
3:30 – ceremony starts
4 – ceremony ends
4-5:30 – wedding party photos
5 pm – cocktail hour begins
5:45 – receiving line into ballroom
6 pm – dinner is served
6:15 – toasts begin
7 pm – cake cutting
7:15 – first dance
11 – reception ends and happily ever after
