Honestly speaking, it’s probably a more practical major than say majoring in History or Liberal Arts.  It will most likely get you an actual job!

I work in the Marketing field for a major retailer and I know that most companies are starting to hire for more Social Media Positions. Some are beefing up their Digital Marketing departments to include a Social Media Marketing positions, as well as the customer service aspect of Social Media.

This is a very “hot” field right now, but im sure in a few years there will be something else new and hot.  Just be sure you dont only limit yourself to Social Media, make sure you have something else to bring to the table.  For example; majoring in communications while taking specialized or extra courses in Social Media.

Not sure if you were looking for advice or not, but that’s my 2 cents 🙂

I, too, was surprised you can major in social media! But that seems too specific for a degree. I’d stick with communications or business or marketing and focus in on social media, if that’s the area that interests you.

FWIW, I majored in Sociology, which is useless (but I knew that).

@September29:  I would be curious what those classes entail.

Facebook 101

Twitter Hashtag Management 301

Instagram Behavior 402

Not trying to be snarky, OP – this is honestly the first thing that comes to mind! I’m sure it’s more involved than that. 🙂
