I haven’t been following it as closely, but from everything I’ve seen, heard, and read, she is beyond guilty, no matter what all the little details are. I don’t know how a woman could do that to her own child. She’s pathetic and a sorry excuse for a mother.

Umm, she better be glad she is protected in jail, because I’m pretty sure if she was out, she would be dead by now! She did it, she knows she did it, and no amount of lying (seriously, I could never be a defense attorney. Don’t they end up lying at least once in every trial? Aren’t you supposed to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?) is going to make her any less guilty

I feel very uninformed b/c I don’t follow it. I think it would just depress me too much.

I’ve been following the trial because living in Florida you can’t escape it.  Initially I thought she’d get off on first-degree murder and be convicted of a lesser charge – I do think she’s 100% guilty of first degree murder, but other than the “she didn’t act right” stuff, the evidence is pretty thin, and all it takes is one juror to buy the line of crap the defense is telling.  They’ve proven she’s a pathological liar and a bad person, but from there it’s still a huge leap to say she murdered her own child.

… But the longer the trial goes on, the more I become convinced that she’s going down for first degree murder.  The defense theory is just not credible.  The jury is supposed to believe that EVERYONE in Casey’s orbit and connected with the case is shady and nefarious, or incompetent at best.  Poor Casey, meanwhile, is mother of the year and an innocent victim.  She lost her baby in a tragic accident.  Her father molested her and browbeat her into covering up an accidental death.  Her brother molested her.  The cops focused on her to the exclusion of everybody else.  The meter reader found the body, hung on to it for awhile, and moved it.  The experts can’t tell the difference between the stench of garbage and a dead body.  It’s just not credible.  She’s getting convicted.

I do think Cindy Anthony perjured herself when asked about the chloroform searches (and I think the prosecution will be able to back that up on rebuttal), but other than little Caylee, she is to me the most tragic figure in the case.  She lost her granddaughter and is about to lose her daughter, too.  I don’t condone the lying, but I feel bad for her.

@ohheavenlyday: Gotcha. Still, couldn’t imagine a legit person every willing wanting to be a defense attorney.

Hopefully, once she is charged and exhausted appeals, she will tell the truth.  Hopefully….

I have not been following the trial, but if all the stuff about her dad isn’t true, why not put him on the stand to testify against her?

Premature at this point.  I think the state is waiting to see if Casey will take the stand (she is the only one who can substantiate the allegations of molestation raised in the opening statement).  More than likely, the defense will drop the molestation thing altogether and stick to poking holes in the forensic evidence because Casey, a proven pathological liar, has zero credibility with the jury and would be ripped to shreds on cross.  If she doesn’t testify, the state has no reason to call George again – it only gives credence to what is at this point a totally unsubstantiated allegation.

I think she deserves the death penalty. Seeing Casey makes me sick. I have seen several pictures from the courtroom in which she is smiling and that makes me hate her even more.

@ohheavenlyday: I agree about Cindy.  The Anthonys even released a statement to the media along the lines of they want the truth but will do anything they can to keep her from getting a death sentence.

For those of you following the case closely, I have a question.  I just do not understand why people are SO obsessed with this case.  Sadly, there are cases where mothers murder their children all of the time that do not get the attention this case has gotten.  For instance, this case was heard in the exact same courthouse, but without nearly the same media hoopla or fights among people in line to get in: http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/celebrity.news.gossip/06/03/billy.bob.thornton.daughter.ppl/index.html?iref=allsearch . In my city, a woman was recently found guilty of microwaving her baby to death. It was on the local news, but I never saw anything about it on the national news (a local paper story suggested this was because the mother/baby were black, but I don’t know if that is the only reason).

What is it about Casey Anthony that makes this case different?

@Leprechaun: In short, I think people are just fascinated by 1) the intricate web of lies (most of them made up on the fly, yet still managed to send seasoned law enforcement on a wild goose chase for many weeks) and 2) weird family dynamics.

My favorite movie ever is “The Usual Suspects” and Casey is so the Kevin Spacey character in that movie.
