I have always wanted to ask this question and thought now was a good a time as any.
Can the ladies who have updo’s explain to me what the reason for them is? I have always wondered why the back of a bride’s head was significant. Usually most people are looking at you straight on (except for the 20 minute ceremony) so from the front the hair is ostensibly scraped back from the face.
Just for the record I am loving the updo’s shown on here and they are so glamorous (I don’t suit my hair tied up so I am always jealous) but I have always wondered

Well I am having an updo because my dress is open and very detailed in the back, so I dont want to cover it up! My hair also frizzes when I get hot, so I don’t want to take any chances when I’m dancing around all night. I also prefer my hair up normally anyways.

Cuz my hair doesn’t do well when it’s down haha its thin and curls fall out easily. I might do half up though… Not sure yet.

I don’t think you HAVE to have one, it really depends on what the person likes and feels beautiful with. Having my hair down makes me feel like it’s just another day. But mostly I am doing an updo because it is going to be HOT HOT HOT at my wedding and I won’t be able to handle having any hair on my neck or blowing around in possible high winds. Yuck!

I’m choosing an updo because my hair is very fine and if I curl it they fall out after an hour or so. I love the half updos with wavy or curly hair but it don’t want to be bother with my hairstyle falling out after the ceremony and getting in my face. I’m not sure why the back is important either. I actually don’t care very much as long as my hair looks full and is out of my face lol. I’m probably not much help.

My hair is frizzy and an updo is the only thing I can trust will still look great at the end of the night

I’ve never thought the back of the bride’s head was any more significant than any other part of her, but I know a lot of people have updos so they stay cool throughout the day. Wedding dresses are usually heavy and hot, so keeping your hair from getting sweaty and ruining curls seem to be the reasons I’ve heard.

I wear my hair up 90% of the time anyway so it just makes sense. I actually love the look of having hair down in loose waves, but I know I’ll be hot, my hair will go limp, etc. I like the idea of just having it put up and not having to worry about it for the rest of the night.

I prefer updos because I really can’t stand my hair being down for a certain length of time. It always seems to get messy or in the way. I can’t wait to cut my hair.

I want an updo because we are getting married on the beach. I don’t want my hair flying all around. also my hair gets really flat realy quick no matter what I do.

For me, I am going to wear my hair up for two reasons: 1) the back of my dress is open and I want to show it off, and 2) I have some pretty fabulous vintage earrings and they will be much more noticable with my hair off my face.

I hadn’t even considered the heat for many brides (and for all of you that rock your hair being tied back – again, not me). I come from a place that’s freezing and raining all the time so heat never occured to be.
When I said “significant” I meant in the amount of work that goes in to making the back of an updo look stunning. It’s as significant as the rest of the look, I get that but I just wondered – that’s all.
Thanks for all your answers ladies.

I want an updo because they’re elegant and we’re getting married outside however i do want to let it down for the reception.

My hair is very thin and fine and doesn’t hold style very well. When I leave it down, it usually ends up looking thin and stringy within a couple hours. I didn’t want that. Besides, I didn’t want my hair to hide my face, shoulders, or decolletage. Finally, since we had a pretty formal wedding, and updos just tend to be more formal, I thought it would fit better with my overall style.

@Paleored: So many dresses just seem to suit an updo. Yep, that’s the thing with hair being down you never see the beautiful earrings.
