My SO and I literally have none of the same music taste. He likes Elvis Presley, AC/DC, and hip hop. I like almost everything else. However, when I stumbled upon “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Ingrid Michaelson, we both agreed it struck such a perfect balance between us, that nothing else could top it as our first dance.

Our first dance song is going to be “It Had to be You” by Harry Connick Jr. We are totally obsessed with the movie “When Harry Met Sally” (seriously, we have watched it on pretty much every anniversary and right after we got engaged, lol). Plus, of all of our favorite songs, it’s probably the most “danceable”. That said, we mostly listen to bluegrass and indie stuff, and we were originally going to go with “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers (until it totally blew up and became the song of the year) or “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne (our first concert together!), but our best man danced with his wife to that song at their wedding. All great songs, though!

Our original idea for first song wasn’t very wedding appropriate….and we kept trying to find one but nothing felt right. Then one day I heard the new Jason mraz song I won’t give up. And I called him and told him it was it. It was perfect for us.

We had a really hard time choosing music overall but being that our wedding was Disney themed we choose So this is love by Cinderella. I love her voice and it was perfect for us 🙂

I’ve been bugging my Fiance to pick a song that makes him think of me and of course now he picked one and I don’t like it! He likes the older song “shining star” by the Manhattans but it makes me think of cheesy commercials. We listened to it together and he was so sweet saying how it describes his feelings for me so I don’t know how to break it to him that I hate it.
We are having a beach wedding so I like something like Jack Johnson’s “Better Together” or Jason Mraz “Lucky” or Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love”. Now, looks like I’m stuck with motown ):

Ends of the Earth by Lord Huron
Music is my favorite thing in the world and I’ve always been very passionate about it. My fiance is not as interested in music as I am, and has pretty much given me full reign of picking the soundtrack to our wedding. I picked a handful of songs that I thought were fitting for us, and he told me which he didn’t like and which he did. We narrowed it down to one that fits us as a couple because we are both curious, adventurous people and the lyrics are reflective of exploring the earth with someone you love. Plus, the song is slow with an explosive chrous, which seems easy to dance to since neither of us can dance 🙂

So, I just want to say thanks to all of you that have replied to this post! I’m currently building a song list from your suggestions – so in one way, you’ll all make it to northern Sweden for our wedding!
@conkin420: Haha! I can definitely see my Fiance do the same “Eocenia suggested lots of song! Like… um… eh… oh I know one!”
I’m sure he’ll end up love it as well! Love 80’s music myself, but just can’t come up with something appropriate – neither “Holding out for a hero” nor “Final Countdown” feels suitable. 🙂
Love Marilyn Mansons version of tainted love! However, perhaps not the ultimate wedding song. 😉 That’s such a great story with your friend & the first kiss – will they play during the wedding? We’re fortunate enough that FI’s sister is a professional sing & songwriter, so she will play at ours.
That’s a very sweet song, but too slow for what we want to do. Plus, adding a Christian song wouldn’t go over well with Future Mother-In-Law (she already think I’m dictating too much by wanting to get married in my family church…).
You can’t really go wrong with Elvis!
That song is so strong – goes straight to the dance list for our wedding, thanks! Best of luck to the two of you!
I really love the stories like yours, how you started out to a sound track – it’s so nice that you have a song that reminds you of that very sweet time of a new relationship!

@farmgirl123: I LOVE her version of this song. Makes me cry!
Our song is Amos Lee- Sweet Pea. In our first 6 month of dating we were already pretty serious. I took what was supposed to be a 2 week trip back to Boston to see my family and friends. I had no idea how hard it would be to be away from him for that long. He called me and told me he wanted me to listen to something, and played this song for me. I cried. Needless to say I flew home early. Since then his pet name for me is ‘Sweet Pea”. The song is perfect for our first dance too, since it’s short and sweet, and FI(unlike me), doesn’t really like being the center of attention!
Some other songs that are meaningful to us that we’ll probably still play at our wedding:
Lee Dewyze- Brooklyn Bridge
Frank Sinatra- The Best is yet to Come
Harry Connick Jr- Wink and a Smile
Dave Matthews- Up and Away
Zac Brown- Whatever it is
Hope that helps! Hope you guys find a song that means something to both of you!

Our first dance song was “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin… I think it was always *our song* in my head because it always made me think of him when I heard it. The day after he proposed, we were in the car and kinda trying to get our heads together and figure out where to start, and when he mentioned how we needed a first dance song, I was like “that’s easy, it’s going to be Led Zep, Thank You.” First wedding decision made instantly!

Our song is “When I Fall in Love” by Nat King Cole. Fi plays guitar very well, and after we had been dating for a month or so, he brought his guitar over to my house on a late spring evening, and serenaded me with that song. That was the first moment I really knew this was something, prior to that I had just been seeing him casually without thinking of much of a future.
We are also considering “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers. We both really love the Rbros, and it’s a beautiful song.

@rubybride718: I had popped in one of my Beyonce CDs the other day, and Halo started playing. I instantly got choked up thinking of how much it relates to how I felt (with my guard up) at the beginning of our relationship. It’s a serious contendor for first dance!

Our song is “The Way You Look Tonight”. When we were first dating in college, I would work my retail job during the summers when we were away from each other and they would play that song almost every day.
Our first dance will be “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. We’re both huge Ben Folds fans and it’s always been our “other” song. Besides, I wanted something a bit sappier and slower to dance to 😛
