I’m a total tattoo virgin. I have no idea what is really involved pain wise, or price-wise and I haven’t even looke it up. I live in Montreal, there are lots of tattoo parlours around but I’m pretty sure which is the best one, the biggest one with the most up to date tools and the most experienced professionnal artists.
I want to get a small S printed somewhere, like, the size of a dime. I want it to be somewhere that’s not too obvious. I’m hesitating between the outside of my foot, or on my ribs right under my boob. I’m sure the pain will be awful since I have no meat in those areas of my body, but it’s a tiny tattoo.
Not necessarily this exactly, maybe a little less swirly, but the same thin lines
I’d like to see other people’s tattoos 🙂

This is mine. It’s a quote from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and fairy wings. It took about 45 minutes and was around $200. It hurt, but a lot less than I thought it would. The shading was the worst as they go over the same spot numerous times
I’d really caution you against something so small. That S the size of a dime would look like a blob, especially with all the swirls. Over time, those lines will blur together and you’ll just have a weird black shape you’ll hate.

@Purple_Bride: I got my first tattoo (the kanji in the middle of my back) done in Halifax and it was $75 bucks I believe. Then the Japanese style dragon was done in Japan and cost about $600 for 6 hours of work. I would say that you would normally pay around $100 an hour.
Do your homework, though. My first tattoo was done poorly and scarred really badly. I just went to a random shop when I was 18, and my “artist” obviously didn’t have much experience.

There are a lot of places on your body that won’t hurt getting a small S on it especially since their is no need for coloring much in for the most part but the places you are considering ARE a bit painful especially if it’s your first tattoo however if those were your gut choices you may regret getting it elsewhere later down the road so just go for it. Take the plunge I’m sure you will love it and the pain will probably be minimal.

Dopamine was overpriced though b/c of the shop i went to! I also have a tiny roman numeral date on my ankle that was $50.

Oh yes and like bp2be said, you’re looking at about $100 an hr but one of my artists is about $150 an hour but she does a hell of a job. You will prob pay around 60-75 for yours.

I have a 6-word Italian phrase on my ribs, right under my bra line, and it cost about $80. I also have a bird I drew on my wrist and it was also around the same $.
Dont worry about the pain, just go for what you want! First tat was on the ribs and I was super scared, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought and for something that tiny, it will be over before you know it.

Mine is a chinese symbol that means love. It was $80 and it felt like someone was scratching my sunburn. It’s on my right shoulder blade.

This is my chest piece. (The only part that hurt was over my collarbone and it wasn’t bad at all). Sorry the pic is huge (and I am wearing a shirt – it’s just pulled down, haha).
It is of a song lyric from “Designed Like Dice” by Trophy Scars. This is the actual lyric:
“Nothing is sweeter than realizing those dreams are false ideas of love. So, rewire the mainframe… the contracts that bind us – that keep us together are a joke. That’s life in a hospital…”
People always wonder why I got THAT of all things, but, at the time I got it I was in and getting out of a bad relationship and I wanted it as a reminder that there were better things out there for me (and even a better boyfriend). After six years of hell, I got out for good. So, it was a celebration of that.
Anyway, I’m rambling… The tattoo took three hours and cost $240. The shop where I got it is overpriced and they even have a sign that says such and “You will get what you pay for.”
And I don’t have a tattoo on my ribs, but I heard it hurts.

I have two tattoos, both in the same area but my sparrow is on my ribs as well.
My sparrow cost me $75 ($95 with tip) and my Celtic tree of life (which I am anxious to get covered, the lady did TERRIBLE) was $60.
I have an incredibly high pain tolerance from BMX racing and motocross, but I actually fell asleep getting the tattoo on my hip. With the sparrow, the most painful spot was actually my stomach. My ribs were just annoying and weird because I felt my whole ribcage vibrating.
To me, the whole “bone is the most painful” is bs. Fatty areas have more nerve and I feel those are the WORST. My stomach was seriously hell. Especially counting you just want that “S” and it’ll take like 10 minutes max, go for wherever you want!
Make sure you do tons of research for a good shop! Don’t let “someone’s buddy that tattoos out of his house” do it. I even got mine done by my exes family friend in a shop, and I have to get it covered up because it looks awful.

I have a little ladybug(1/4 of an inch) on the top of my foot. It cost $70, but i got it in Greenwich village so it was overpriced. Apparently, they charge more for below the ankle tattoos.

colored rose: $300
black shading roses: $500
butterfly behind my ear; $50

I have a small dragonfly on the inside of my ankle. It’s about the size of quarter, maybe a little bigger, and cost me $50. I was expecting it to hurt and it didn’t at all! (I have bony ankles)

I only have really tiny pics. I have this one on my back (yeah, a tramp stamp) that cost me $100
And this one on my ankle which cost $120
This is mine! It cost $80.

I have a sun, a moon, a flower & a butterfly. None were over $100.
I have the words “Love Never Fails” on my foot that cost $60, a memorial on my ribs that cost $80 and a flower on my right hip that cost $120.
Out of all of them, my ribs hurt the worst. My foot didn’t bother me at all, took about 15 minutes. Best of luck!

I have 5 tattoos all together. My first 4 I got so long ago I can’t even remember how much they cost. My most recent was done last April and its a cancer awareness ribbon with butterfly wings. It took over an hour and cost me $100.
ETA: This tattoo hurt pretty bad but I think its because on the side of my thumb I have a bad chemical burn. In the picture it looks like just faint bruising, but if you see my wrist in person it looks like a bad bruise. I actually have no feeling in my wrist but if you bump it, or when I got the tattoo its excrutiating pain. I have to go get my tattoo touched up too lol. I’m dreading it.

Thanks! I’m working up the nerve to go, and I’m 99% sure I’m going to go with my ribs.
