haha, I went shopping just to look and I ended up buying on the spot! I bought mine in September/October for a June wedding. My deal was just too damn sweet to pass up.

I consoled myself by going to a couture shop a month later and realized how bad all the pricey dresses looked on me. It reinforced the fact that I got a rockin’ frock and made the best choice. But, I did look online to give myself an idea of what I wanted. I printed out things I loved and things I hated so I was pretty armed!

Have fun!!! I only got to go to like, 3 dress shops. I wish I had more time simply because it’s so much fun to try them all on! You don’t want to be stressed about not finding the right dress though

I’m getting married May 8, 2010 and have been dress shopping about 3 times. I found about 10 dresses that I wanted to buy but my fiance and my mom convinced me to wait. We haven’t even hit the year mark yet so I’m glad I didn’t buy it yet! I stopped my search and plan to pick it up again this summer once we have about 10 months to go!

well, when our wedding was for this june i bought it last march. but it was so cheap and so pretty that my mom bought it for me.  I do not think it really matters as long as it is what you want.  look around a lot though.

I agree, if you find a dress that is the fabled "the one" it doesn’t matter how soon it is.

But then I’m the type to really think out and plan big purchases. So when I buy that dress it WILL be the one! I’m going to a salon on saturday that supposingly carries my dream dress! So we’ll see! I hope it looks good on me so I can start my online search of a cheaper version! I would honestly be really happy if I find a dress sooner rather than later.

I actually bought my dress in February for my September ’09 wedding. I didn’t want to wait too long to buy my dress. When I found the dress and tried it on I knew it was the one so I snatched it right there. I wouldn’t hesitate too much if you found the one.

Good luck!!

Mine is taking 5 months to make. Some take longer, and you have to add in shopping time/ time to pick it out.

I just bought my dress last week!  Our wedding is in October.  I didn’t want to rush into it and buy a dress that I could have ended up not liking.  Also, I liked that there was time for me to finalize some of the other parts of the day (ceremony and reception locations, for example) so I knew the style of dress that would be appropriate.

I still didn’t really have the feeling that it was The One but time was running out.  We have less than 6 months to go now.  The dress isn’t an important aspect of the day for me.  The dress I chose is pretty and it met most of my requirements.

I knew i would need a lot of time to get comfortable with the whole wedding dress thing, despite the fact the when i shop normally, I know exactly what i want.  I was lucky to go with my very supportive Man of Honor and one of my maids as well as my mom.  It was a little nerve wracking but i’m glad we were allowed to take pictures.  Looking back at them made all the difference.  So, clearly i’m already shopping.  My plan is to have the dress ordered by July of this year for June 2010.  We’ll see how that goes.

I finally bought in Jan for my August 1 wedding.  i started looking in early November.  I think 6 mos is about as little time as I’d leave if you’re going to order.  9 mos sounds pretty reasonable to me.  I haven’t had a single second thought re: my dress, which is actually 100% unlike me.  I probably return like half the clothes I buy normally, it’s a long running joke with my Fiance.  So I dont know what to say about buyer’s remorse.  Mostly I’d say that if you’re starting 9 mos out, make sure you’re in love with it…and don’t let anyone pressure you to buy before you’re absolutely ready.  Salons will always give  you reasons to buy right then (e.g. some kind of discount or whatever, the woman at Saks literally tried to convince me I had to make a decision in the next 20 minutes or it would cost like $1000 more the next day).  Don’t feel pressured…sleep on it.  And then after you’ve bought, stop looking!

I’m planning on kicking off the dress shopping this summer, probably late-June/early-July since I plan on taking on the late-July Running of the Brides in DC

I’m not really looking for a wedding gown as much as a wedding dress, though I’m not sure if that will make it easier or more difficult to find a dress.

Ok so I was just looking at dresses online and I booked an appointment at a bridal shop and my Out of Town Maid/Matron of Honor is coming in to go dress shopping. And I have just fell in love with this dress online and I dont think the bridal shop I made the appointment for has it…but another one in my area carries the brand…but I still want to go and try on dresses for my appointment because the lady was very nice and showed me some dresses while I was there. And I dont even know if I will like this other dress when I try it on…but if I find a dress at the shop I made the appointment for but still want to try on this other dress they might not carry…can I ask them to hold the one I like or come back so I can try on the other dress at the other shop?

We just picked our date for May 29, 2010 and I am so ready for dress shopping, unfortunately I don’t have the money right this minute to go out and buy one, but no harm in looking, right? 🙂

I too am a May 29, 1010 wedding!  How exciting niceinjoe 🙂

I already bouoght my dress, a Demetrios in Macy’s bridal shop.  I was told that the dress will arrive in August or September and take anywhere from 7-8 months to alter.  I didn’t think it would take that long!!!  I am glad I started looking in February.  Keep in mind that if there is a lot of detail in the bottom that the dress will take a long time to alter if it needs to be shortened.  The dress comes in without all the applique.  That is only added after the dress is altered and this could be very time consuming.  I picked out Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses and they have to be fitted and ordered in November.  Hope this helps and good luck and congrats to all!
