It depends on the designer. If they’re buying off the rack they can wait a long time. If you’re having them order dresses it can take a few months for them to come in and they might need alterations.

@FutureMrs.Spencer:  It depends on the designer then. I know my Bari Jay dresses are supposed to take 3 months to come in. I would go shopping a few months before you want them to order the dresses in case they have sticker shock. Then they will know how much they need to save up. I think its easier to save up $150 (or whatever your dresses cost) in a few months than it is to try to wait and have the girls be ready to pay the same day you look. I know the timeline I’m using (weddingwire) says that I should start looking 7 months out, and choose/order the dresses 5 months out. I think you can start looking on your own whenever you’re ready. I ended up picking a designer before I asked my bridesmaids. I’m letting them pick whichever dress they want from that designer with a few constraints. Most of my girls will order their dresses 4 months out so they have 1 month for alterations. If you end up liking expensive dresses, consider ordering them online. We’re getting ours through netbride.com for about half the cost of what my Maid/Matron of Honor saw them going for in a salon.

This is when you will all know that I am Type A crazy. Half of my bridesmaids already have their dresses. And the other two are ordering theirs in January.

I actually picked their dresses before I picked mine. LOL

We are going with The Dessy Group, Alfred Sung cocktail dresses in silk dupioni. Two of my gals were SUPER lucky and found their styles at the Dessy Sample Sale in NYC in August for $20 each!!  My other two are going to order from Netbridal, as it’s cheaper than ordering directly from Dessy or Weddington Way.

It’s a bit easier for us, bc all four girls are wearing different styles (same color, fabric, and lenght).

I went a few weeks ago to pick them out. One still hast to order it. One of my bridesmaids was getting surgery on her foot and with christmas and thanksgiving coming up I wanted to get the dress chosen so they would have time to save up and order it before the end of the year.

So I think anytime would be an appropriate time to pick them out, to atleast give them time to save up depending on the cost of the dress.

Wow you guys are all over it! I haven’t even asked all of my bridesmaids lol. I feel like a slacker. As for dresses (mine or theirs) haven’t even gone shopping! Yikes.

I’m not sure when I’m going to look.  The problem is that two of my bridesmaids live in one city, my sister (and MOH) lives in another state, and I live in a completely different city.  I’m thinking I’ll look with my sister during Thanksgiving weekend while I’m dress shopping and pick out a few options from a website or chain store where my two other bridesmaids can get them quite easily.

@Reeniero:  I am type A crazy as well!  My girls have their dresses too. They actually just came in from Alfred Angelo last weekend.  We ordered them in August.

@Nurse_Bee: I still have one more to ask. I really wanted to ask all my girls in person. Well, two of them are my sisters, so that was easy, haha. One of them lives in Florida but her family lives in my hometown so when she came to visit recently I asked her. The other one lives on the other side of the state so we hardly ever see each other and I am started to get worried that she feels shunned because I haven’t asked yet! But we are spending New Year’s at her new place so I plan on asking her then – if I can hold out that long!

I have chosen Bari Jay as my designer and my girls will be ordering. I’ve always heard that you need to order at least 3 months in advance. But I’m going to have my girls do four. That way if they need alterations, there will be no stress.

I plan on going up to the store with 3 of my 5 girls during my christmas break. I live in North Carolina and my wedding will be in Cleveland so I’d like to see some dresses on them beforehand and get a feel for what they like. 🙂
