I was thinking of sending ours out 9/1 for an RSVP of 9/14, with a wedding date of 10/20. The reason being that our venue requires final counts ten business days ahead of time, and I’d like to have a nice open window to contact a lot of our notoriously late-RSVPing relatives. There’s a sale on the website we’re ordering our invites from, so if we can snag them now I’d like to get the deal. Is 9/1 too early? When are you ladies sending yours out?

I don’t think 9/1 is too early. More notice is always good!

I’m giving my friends 2-3 months, probably leaning towards closer to 3 months. I am the first wedding of my group of friends. Most of them are downright lost when it comes to wedding ettiquette, “Can I be a bridesmaid?” “Do I get an out of town guest gift?” “Well, if I dump my boyfriend I’ll just find someone to bring.” Think about how much the final guest count affects not only the venue and caterer, but you. If 10 people say no, that’s probably one less table you’d need and thus, 1 less centerpiece, fewer favors, table numbers, escort cards, etc etc etc. The more time, the merrier.

@MrsBroccoli: That’s so funny because that’s exactly what my family is like, and there are over 80 of them – JUST first cousins, aunts and uncles! Insanity. We’re going to try and bypass a lot of that by being like “ x seats have been reserved in your honor” so there’s no way they can squeeze in more people. But yep, all the extra stuff like centerpieces/favors etc, that’s exactly what I’m worried about.
I just keep reading how so many ladies send theirs out just 4 weeks ahead of time, and knowing my family that makes me nervous. Thanks for the reinforcement!

9/1 is almost cutting it close if you want an RSVP by 9/14, I think. You’ll probaly get a lot of stragglers. I’ve been considering sending mine out early August with an RSVP of 9/6, wedding 10/6.

So our date is Oct 20, 2012 but we are planning on sending out invites in June or July and RSVP by September 20. Keep in mind we have about 85% of our guest are OOT’ers.

@actingdarling: 6 months?? Maybe for STDs? Or someone said 6 weeks and you misheard?

Most of our guests are Out of Town so we’re shooting for July send out.

It’s not too early! 6 weeks is usally a good time to get invitations out (considering you already sent STD’s). This give out of towners time to plan and book travel. I will be sending mine out late August. Wedding is October 12th!
