I think about the 12 week mark I gave up on the belly band and went for maternity jeans and never looked back. Goodness, after the baby gets here I am saving these jeans for the holidays! — HELLO THANKSGIVING DINNER!

I broke down and bought them at 10 weeks. I tried the belly band and using elestics on the buttons and was just miserable. I spent some money on maternity clothes and unless you see the band on the stomach you wouldn’t even know I had maternity pants on. Since you are going to be wearing them, you can either start soon and get more use out of them or be uncomfortable and get less use of your maternity clothes. Most tops I could wear until now, I am 16 weeks and my tops are starting not to fit and look awkward.

I bought maternity pants around 12 weeks, but starting around 6 weeks some days I was unbuttoning my pants at the end of the day due to bloating. By 12 weeks it was consistent enough for me to make the move.

I didn’t buy maternity clothes until 19 weeks, at that point maternity jeans became necessary and the rubberband method just wasn’t cutting it anymore!

I started wearing maternity jeans first around 16 weeks or so when I just couldn’t stand the hair tie trick anymore. I’m still wearing a lot of non maternity clothes right now at 25 weeks. I belly band my work pants because my maternity pants are still a little too big. I probably won’t go completely maternity clothes for another couple of weeks.

I started wearing my maternity jeans at 14 weeks. Before that I was using a hair tie to hold my pants closed. They are just so much more comfortable. I will probably wait to buy tops until my bump gets too big to fit into normal shirts.

I held out until 12-14 weeks.
But if you are very small, it’s likely that your growing belly will be more pronounced earlier. You can get by with a rubber band around your jeans buttons for the waistband or a belly band and most shirts will be fine before you need actual maternity clothes, though.
In the beginning, though, my stomach looked more beer gut than baby belly and it appears that I’m not alone…I hate to tell you, but the “I feel fat” thing ain’t going to change for a while :/

I’m originally a size 2/4.
I’ll be 26 weeks this weekend, I’m still wearing mostly non-maternity clothes, just going with looser/longer shirts I already owned. I do wear a few maternity items, but it’s not a “must” yet. My low-rise jeans still fit.
One thing to definately buy: belly bands! They are awesome, they let you wear your pants unbuttoned.

I tried the tummy sleeve/belly band thing but I was so bloated, it still felt uncomfortable. I ended up starting to wear maternity jeans around 10-11 weeks. When I went to the doctor for my 12 week appointment, she commented on them and said that while they probably aren’t super necessary for me, they’ll be a lot more comfortable. She said she held out until 24 weeks and when she put them on, she wished she had worn them from the start.
For shirts, I probably started wearing a couple maternity shirts around 20-21 weeks for comfort and now I’m mostly in maternity shirts (at 31 weeks tomorrow with some stretchy shirts/tank tops mixed in) because they’re longer and fit better.
