When during your pregnancy did you get ultrasounds? I had my first appointment (4w2d) and they did a vaginal ultrasound. I’m going back at 6 weeks and they’re hoping to do one (not sure if vaginal or belly?) to hear the heartbeat. I’m seeing other people not getting ultrasounds until 10+ weeks? Is it abnormal to have them done early and close together like my doctor is suggesting?

It really just depends on the practice. I only had one at 20 weeks with my first pregnancy. With my second I’ve had one at 8 weeks and then 20 weeks. I see midwives at a birth center and their philosophy is very low intervention unless indicated.

I got one at my first appt (9 weeks) and then at each appt (every 4 weeks) until my anatomy US at 20 weeks. I haven’t had one since! My doc said she liked to do them until the baby’s movements can be felt- I loved it!

As a sonographer, it’s recommended not get an ultrasound done until at least 12 weeks. Ultrasound is relatively safe, but soundwaves are still energy and it does produce heat so you don’t want any unnecessary exposure to your baby. Your doc will usually tell you if they recommend an earlier ultrasound due to high risk, twins, etc.

i had my first at 12 weeks, another at 16 weeks, one at around 18 weeks in the er, one at 23 weeks, and one at 25 weeks. i had a low lying placenta so they were keeping an eye on it.

thank you so much for your insight. I’m young and as far as we know not high risk for anything. I really liked my doctor when I met with him but I’m wondering if I should switch. I think I’ll at least decline the ultrasound at my appointment when I’ll be 6 weeks. Is there a way for them to confirm the baby is still in there and normal without the ultrasound?

In the uk so maybe different but for first baby you usually have a 12 week scan (to check number of babies and to give due date) and then 20 weeks (to check for abnormalities).
You may have scans late in pregnancy too depending on your condition.
So that’s what I’ve had. And all abdominal. I’ve not personally heard of a pregnant lady in the uk having ultrasound via vagina.
We also paid privately at 10 weeks for a nifty test. This is not an NHS thing. They scanned me very briefly to check I was at least 10 weeks before taking the blood test.

The doctor might do another transvaginal ultrasound at 6 or 8 weeks to see the heartbeat and for dating purposes. After that, the doctor can check on things by listening to the heartbeat with a Doppler. You may have an over the abdomen ultrasound at around 20 weeks to determine that all parts are there, and possibly one before that to check the neck fold. The best thing to do is ask your doctor what the schedule will be next time you see him.

I had my first scan at four weeks (still a guestamate at this stage) and Im having another on Monday (at approximately six weeks). My first showed nothing at all, which was expected. But I am considered a high risk case as my first pregnancy was ectopic. At the moment my pregnancy is considered a “pregnancy of unknown location.” So my hcg levels are tested every 48 hours, and they will do frequent scans until they can rule out a pregnancy in my remaining tube. My hcg is high enough now that they should be able to see something on Mondays scan. I think usually what happens here is a 12 week and a 20 week scan.

I’m in the uk. I had two transvaginal scans at 6 and 9 weeks both were because I was bleeding. I had the normal 12 and 20 weeks scans. I also had growth scans at 24,27 and 36 weeks as baby was big and I had another bleed at 27 weeks. I had a lot of scans compared to what is normal.
at 6 weeks there is no other way to check for a heartbeat, but it also might not be there yet (mine was a couple of days too early) feel free to decline any scans you feel are too much

My first appointment was scheduled at 10 weeks but I had a lot of bleeding at almost 7 weeks so I had an ultrasound then. Otherwise I wouldn’t have until the 10 week appointment.

I got my first ultrasound at 5w2d, and from then on every two weeks, no worries!

I had my first ultrasound (for dating purposes) at around seven weeks for each of my three pregnancies, declined the NT scan at twelve weeks and then went for the anatomy scan at twenty weeks. I had other scans later in my pregnancies but they were for specific medical reasons.

I’m high risk so I’ve had them at 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 9.5 weeks, 13 weeks, and 20 weeks. I’ve heard though it’s normal to only have them at 12 and 20 weeks.

I had my dating US at 8 weeks and have another booked at 13 weeks to check for chromosonal abnormalities?(downes syndroms, etc) I am not high risk but we wanted to know. I dont know when Ill have another but I assume around the 20wk mark.
