I’m 6 weeks pregnant (today!), but my first ultrasound is scheduled for July 19th (12 weeks!). From what I’ve read around the boards, this is a SUPER long time to wait for an ultrasound. I expected to get one at around 8 weeks…
So, I’m curious, when did you have your first ultrasound?

In Canada, unless you have an issue requiring one or if you dont know when you got pregnant, you dont get an ultrasound until your anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks.
The US seems to scan A LOT. Some will do trans-vag as soon as 5 weeks…Early ultrasounds can cause more stress than they are worth, and honestly I think it’s best to get as few as possible.
I had my first u/s at 13 weeks because i was bleeding.

8 weeks, but only because we’d had a semi-recent miscarriage, and they wanted to give me the reassurance that it was a viable pregnancy. Otherwise the dating ultrasound would have been scheduled for 10 weeks.

I had an emergency one at 7 weeks and will have my optional NT scan at 12 weeks. A lot of providers only do one at 18-20 weeks.

Both my family doctor and RE recommended me to do my first ultrasound at around the 8 weeks mark. I’m not sure if that’s considered early, or if it’s because I have a subseptate uterus.
Canadian site reference – early ultrasound is 6-10 weeks

I had one at 5w5d because they thought I was further along than I actually was. My next one was at 7w4d for a dating scan. I won’t have another until the anatomy scan around 20w.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!! I am 6 weeks too! This is my second pregnancy and like my first I will only have one ultrasound around 20 weeks. I’m a little jealous you get one at 12 weeks!

Whew, I’m feeling a little better about the wait now. I’ve been hearing things about people hearing/seeing the heartbeat very early at a doctor’s appointment and I would LOVE to hear the heartbeat just to know everything is okay. I guess I’ll just have to be patient!

I’m in the US and only got one ultrasound scheduled during my pregnancy through my doc at 19 weeks! He checks the heartbeat every appt, but says that the other ultrasounds aren’t medically necessary unless I show some type of symptom of a high risk situation. It was hard to wait for that 19 week appt 🙂

@urchin: that must not apply in every province since i am in Canada too and i had my first ultrasound at around 13 weeks (NT scan). and i have another scheduled for 20 weeks (anatomy scan). It seemed to me from the all the paper work and booklets my doctor gave me that both were standard common practice.
So OP, my first one was also at 13 or 14 weeks, i think i had it at the latest time i could have had it before missing the window for the NT scan and that was partly due because i only found i was pregnant at 7.5 weeks and was only able to get in for my first prenatal appt at 12 weeks.

@dynamic_duo: Ah! I wasnt aware. It really seems all over the place from region to region.
I think one of the reasons there are so few us’s here is b/c ultrasound depts are so so busy!

I live in the united states and my first ultrasound was at 8 weeks…I’m pretty sure that’s the regular time to check.

I was 7 and a half weeks but i know some places wait crazy long.

12 weeks is normal. I had my first ultrasound at 11w5d. Most doctors won’t even see you until 6-8 weeks and that’s just for medical history; then they only have you to come in every 4 weeks.
(I had my actual first ultrasound at 6 weeks, but that’s because I was in the ER for bleeding and “threatened miscarriage”.)

My first and only US was at 21 weeks. If you are sure of your LMP then a dating US is not recommended.
