I just picked up my 10 week old’s (but I didnt need anything notarized, I just had to show ID to prove I’m her mother) so that we can get her a passport. Other than that, I cant think why we would need it anytime soon.

My son is 7 months old and I have not needed it yet.  the only time I think you’d need it earlier is if you planned on traveling internationally very soon after birth

Hmm, you need it for a passport, to get their temporary driver’s license, registering for school, if you need to get a new copy of their social security card, signing up for sports… I am sure I’m missing some things, but as far as I can tell, you should not need it within the first 6 months unless you and baby will be travelling by plane.

I needed a copy of baby’s birth certificate most times we traveled with him before two.

Never had to use a nortorized one.  We got a copy when we left the hospital and only time have needed another copy of it was when registered my son for elementary school

I received our daughter’s shortly after her birth.  I don’t know when I really needed it but it was nice to have.  When she was three months old, I used it to get her a passport as we knew we wanted to travel with her.  We definitely needed it when we registered her for Kindergarten.

TheGridMonster :  we got ours the first month just for a “just in case.” We got it notarized at the UPS. We are gonna take it on Monday to open a college fund. And we hope to get his passport soon so that way we can travel within the next year (family is out of state).

TheGridMonster :  I think we needed ours to open a bank account for him, but it might have just been his SS card… can’t remember.  I think the Pediatrician needed it as well, so at the 1 month appointment.  I don’t expect to need it again until he’s in school.

TheGridMonster :  You’re welcome!  And oh yes, we used it along with her social insurance card to open up an RESP account for university someday. We live in Canada.  It feels like so long ago so I can’t remember all the details anymore. LOL.

We needed the birth certificate to get the baby on our insurance plan. He was automatically added at birth but we needed to show it within 30 days for him to stay on the policy.

I didn’t get one yet :/

It’s on my to-do list. She has a health card and is registered at the hospital so there’s no worries there, but I need her birth cert to get her SIN card (like the Canadian version of social security, I think?), which I want to get done so we can start her RESP.
